Peddler's Village presents the first annual Rube Goldberg Challenge on Saturday, July 14, 2012.

Are you up for the Rube Goldberg Challenge? Peddler’s Village will be hosting the first annual Rube Goldberg Challenge in honor of its 50th anniversary and late founder Earl Jamison who loved Rube Goldberg machinesVisit Peddler’s Village for the outdoor competition and display on Saturday, July 14, from 1 p.m.-4 p.m. The judging starts at 1 p.m. and Rube Goldberg’s family and Philadelphia television personality Don Polec will make special guest appearances as celebrity judges for the competition. The public can vote for favorite machines in the People’s Choice category. Admission is free and the rain date is Sunday, July 15.

Reuben “Rube” Goldberg (1883-1970) was a Pulitzer Prize winning cartoonist, sculptor and author best known for his comical cartoons parodying complicated machines that accomplish a simple task in many convoluted steps. The task for the Peddler’s Village Rube Goldberg Challenge is to blow up and pop a non-inflated balloon in 20 or more steps. Entries are submitted in three categories: college, high school and friends & family, competing for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place awards with special awards including Best Steps, Theme Machine and a People’s Choice award. Don’t miss the grand scale 50th Anniversary Rube Goldberg machine currently on display on the Peddler’s Village Main Green through August! Created by Zach Umperovitch and Alex Weaver (”The Rube Dudes”) from Purdue University, home of the national competitions, the 50th Anniversary machine incorporates all Village festivals, events, and displays with the simple task of opening the Peddler’s Village History book. Both students hold several Guinness World Records with their previously built machines. The Purdue University team’s 2011 Guinness Book World Record winning machine is on display in Giggleberry Fair and a national competition machine in the Peddler’s Village 50th Anniversary shop.

The 50th Anniversary Rube Goldberg machine hours of operation through August are :Monday-Friday: 11 a.m., 1 p.m., 3 p.m., 5 p.m.Saturday: 10 a.m.-5 p.m. running continuouslySunday: 11 a.m.-5 p.m. running continuously.
