FRESH HOME IDEAS: ROOM REFRESH ADDS NEW LOOK FOR LESS
DALLAS, August 2, 2012 – Summer is the time of year when the days warm up and the sun shines brighter. Why not reflect that summer warmth and brightness in your home with a room refresh?
One lucky homeowner won just such a room makeover from Quick-Step, a market leader in flooring. Dawn White of Greenville, Texas, won Quick-Step’s Room Refresh contest. White was treated to a room makeover by Erinn Valencich, an L.A.-based interior designer and blogger for HGTV’s “Design Happens.”
“I love my new space — it’s perfect!” said White of her refreshed living room.
The trend of a room refresh is catching on with homeowners as they wait for the housing market to recover. According to the National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI), today’s homeowners are interested in modest projects for their homes, such as room refreshes, instead of new additions or major overhauls.
Texas-style transformation
Valencich updated the living room of White’s home and demonstrated how a few simple updates can make a big change to any room. She started the project by replacing the old worn-out carpet with Quick-Step’s Burnished Walnut planks.
“Because the family spends most of their time in the living room, I picked a floor that would give the room warmth and depth, making it a more enjoyable space,” said Valencich.
To help open up the room, Valencich opted for soft browns and greens throughout the room instead of the dark reds and blues White had before.
“Painting the walls in earthy tones and using brown and green accessories such as pillows and slip covers helped to brighten the room and make it seem more spacious,” said Valencich.
Even small touches, as simple as rearranging the furniture, helped give the room a new look. Valencich moved the TV from the corner of the room, where it blocked the window, to a wall. The result was an open, friendly space.
“By making small changes and keeping it simple, any room can feel like new,” said Valencich. “Small projects like replacing worn out floors or updating wall color and home accessories can make a big difference in the look and feel of a room, without going over one’s budget.”
