FALL FUN UNDERWAY FOR FAMILIES AND SCOUTS AT POPULAR CORN MAZE IN NORTH GEORGIA
Uncle Shuck’s Named Top 20 Event for September by Southeast Tourism Society
Getting lost in a cornfield has become an annual fall activity for thousands in north Georgia. The 12th season for Uncle Shuck’s Corn Maze and Pumpkin Patch is now underway, and special events have been added for foster families, boy and girl scouts and fans of Halloween. The family-operated, 12-acre complex was recognized this year by the Southeast Tourism Society as a Top 20 Event for September 2013. This year's maze design commemorates the era in Dawson County related to the distribution of moonshine during Prohibition and birth of stock car racing.
Uncle Shuck’s Corn Maze and Pumpkin Patch will be open weekends in September and November (24th is the final day), and daily in October. Saturday, September 14, the owners of the maze, Mike and Roxanne Pinzl of Alpharetta, Georgia, will host Foster Family Day. All foster parents and their children will receive complimentary admission to the maze as well as a hay ride along the Etowah River. Last year more than 80 people took advantage of the free passes and an afternoon of fun.
Boy Scout Weekend will be September 28-29 and Girl Scout Weekend will be October 5-6. Boy Scouts are invited to participate in an inaugural Cornfield Campout on Saturday, September 28. For Girls Scouts, they will be able to earn Brownie Hiker and Junior Gardener badges. Admission is $12 per scout and each family member, and includes admission to the maze, a hayride, commemorative patch and special offers for each weekend.
Carved into the giant field of cornstalks are more than four miles of trails. From overhead, these trails create a picture of a moonshiner resting in a rocking chair, a scene from the early 1900’s when Prohibition was in full swing. Dawson County became known as an area where people made a living related to the production and distribution of non-tax paid whiskey. Dawson County, which is known as the “Moonshine Capital of the World”, now boasts a legal operation, Dawsonville Moonshine Distillery, and entertains thousands of people with the annual Mountain Moonshine Festival.
This is the 12th puzzling corn maze design for the Pinzl’s, who founded Uncle Shuck’s Corn Maze and Pumpkin Patch in 2002. Attendance has grown annually, and they now entertain more than 38,000 patrons through the maze each fall, September to November, with several thousand additional visitors who are pumpkin buyers and only enjoy the hayride.
Returning on the festival grounds will be the popular Kiddie CORNer. This free activity area includes Tire Mountain, Tower Goat Walk, Soybean Maze and the Picnic Pavillion. The tractor-drawn hayrides feature a new 60-passenger wagon complete with wood benches and hay bales. There are also Corn-ference Rooms that groups can reserve for birthday parties, school field trips and groups. Additional fee-based activities include the Corn Cannon, Bonfire area (weekends), festival food vendors (weekends), and Pumpkin Patch (October). Every weekend in October there will also be pony rides and face painting for children.
Ticket prices are the same as 2012, and exclude taxes*. Admission to the corn maze continues to be $10 for anyone five years old and older; maze admission is free for children four and under. The tractor-drawn hay rides along the Etowah River, which include access to the bonfire area and marshmallows, are $5 per person. The Cob Combo is a ticket for $13, which includes admission to the maze and the hay ride. Cost for the Haunted Maze is $13. Portions of proceeds from the Haunted Maze benefit Dawson County High School. Other fees are listed on the web site.
Uncle Shuck’s Corn Maze and Pumpkin Patch is located only 40 minutes from metro Atlanta. Downtown Dawsonville will celebrate the 46th Annual Mountain Moonshine Festival October 26-27. Located about five miles from the maze, tours and tastings are available at the Dawsonville Moonshine Distillery 7 days a week.
