New Tool for EMRs Prevents Drug-Allergy Reactions and Reduces Errors

Phoenix, AZ — November 11, 2010 — PEPID, the leading developer of clinical decision-support information and technology, announced today the release of its interactive tool for healthcare professionals to check for potential drug-allergy or drug-nutrient reactions.

“Checking for potential interactions between medications and patient’s allergies is crucial, and must be considered in daily patient care.” says John Wagner, PEPID President. “We are excited to offer this new tool to our users, as we continue to offer the full spectrum of clinical decision support through the PEPID Knowledge Base.”

Allergic reactions are estimated to account for 25% of all adverse drug events. PEPID’s new drug-allergy checker allows healthcare professionals to cross reference a patient’s food or drug allergies with their current list of medications and foods, and receive an alert if an allergy or sensitivity exists.

Electronic medical records (EMR) systems or any other healthcare information system can easily integrate this interactive tool into their system to automatically check for any potential allergic reactions based on a patient’s known allergies and current medication list. This interactive tool also contains warnings ranked by probability of a reaction. This functionality helps to meet the requirements for meaningful use reimbursements.

“Our new drug-allergy checker allows system developers to use our APIs to easily create customized alerts for potential allergies and sensitivities.” says Edward Reynolds, PEPID’s Chief Technology Officer. “Our well-defined methods greatly reduce development time so developers can release this critical functionality quickly.”

PEPID’s reputable clinical and pharmacological content is designed to support clinicians through every stage of the decision support process, increasing safety and accuracy through better-informed patient care, and this latest module adds to the robust content and tools available.

PEPID contains the most extensive drug database on the market today, along with thousands of disease profiles and medical conditions, medical and dosing calculators, a drug interactions checker, illustrations, laboratory values and a differential diagnosis generator. All PEPID’s clinical decision support data and tools can be integrated into any healthcare information system, EMR, EHR or EDIS to help meet requirements for meaningful use.
