EMRs and pharmacy systems to benefit from the highest resolution pill pictures

Phoenix, AZ — February 17, 2011 — PEPID, the leading developer of clinical decision-support information and technology, announced today its release of the highest resolution pill pictures into its extensive clinical decision support database. Now healthcare professionals can easily identify patient medications and reduce medication errors.

“A picture truly is worth a thousand words.” says John Wagner, PEPID president. “Now clinicians can eliminate the guesswork and properly identify their patient’s medications by using PEPID’s high-resolution pill pictures, available for integration within their electronic medical record (EMR), healthcare information system (HIS) or pharmacy system.”

With the average American prescribed 12 medications per year, plus the rising number of supplements and homeopathic medications, many Americans may not be able to accurately name their medications. This addition to the PEPID Knowledge Base allows clinicians to accurately identify any medications that are unknown, and allows pharmacists and clinicians to verify the proper medication is being dispensed or administered, reducing medication errors.

“After surveying thousands of pharmacists and clinicians one thing was certain,” Wagner continues, “the need for higher quality pill images was imperative in order to definitively verify unmarked medications. When it comes to identifying medications, resolution is critical.”

PEPID decided to add the highest quality, and most comprehensive medication images to its existing clinical and drug information. EMR or pharmacy systems can easily integrate these high-resolution pill pictures into their current drug information. The pill pictures are pre-mapped to the National Drug Code (NDC) code set to make adding the pill images fast and simple.

“Our pill pictures are mapped to existing nomenclatures IDs, including NDC, for easy integration into existing EMR and pharmacy systems. Developers can use our software development kit and APIs to programmatically receive drug information, pill pictures or both,” says Edward Reynolds, PEPID chief technology officer.

PEPID contains the most extensive drug database on the market today, along with thousands of disease profiles and medical conditions, medical and dosing calculators, a drug interaction checker, drug-allergy checker, anatomical illustrations, laboratory values and a symptom checker. All PEPID’s clinical decision support data and tools can be integrated into any healthcare information system, electronic medical record (EMR), electronic health record (EHR) or emergency department information system (EDIS) to help meet requirements for meaningful use.

Those attending HIMSS February 20-24 in Orlando are encouraged to stop by PEPID’s booth #663 to see a demonstration. The official launch of the new, high-resolution pill pictures will be held at the PEPID reception Tuesday, February 22 from 4:30-6:30 on the HIMSS exhibit floor.
