T-System’s Emergency Medicine EHR Integrates PEPID’s Drug and Clinical Content to Enhance Safety for Children and Adults

New clinical decision support increases accuracy and safety of medication ordering and dispensing for adult and pediatric patients in emergency departments

PHOENIX – August 4, 2011 – T-System, Inc., the industry leader in clinical workflow and documentation solutions for emergency medicine, today announced that it will incorporate content from PEPID, the top developer of clinical decision support for healthcare professionals, into its emergency department (ED) information system, T SystemEV®, in order to improve the accuracy and safety of patient care for adult and pediatric ED patients. T SystemEV along with the integrated content will provide extensive drug and clinical data at the point of care to help ED providers make accurate decisions and prevent errors.

“We are dedicated to offering the best available tools to ensure optimal patient care and safety in the ED,” said Robert Hitchcock, M.D., FACEP, T-System vice president and chief medical information officer. “Today EDs are faced with rising patient volume and more complex cases. We turned to PEPID’s trusted decision support to make the care process easier, faster and safer for providers working under greater and greater demands.”

Determining accurate medication dosages can be daunting. Calculations involving complex mathematical formulas are oftentimes difficult to memorize, and errors can still occur even when doctors remember those formulas. Research shows children are more vulnerable and at greater risk to dosing errors than adults because most medications are developed in concentrations appropriate for older individuals. The U.S. Pharmacopeia’s MEDMARX database records indicate that during 2006 and 2007, 37.5 percent of harmful pediatric medication errors were caused by an improper dose or quantity.

“We are pleased to partner with an industry ED EHR leader to help meet clinicians’ unique needs for maximum safety, usability and efficiency,” said John Wagner, PEPID president. “This relationship will embed PEPID’s clinical decision support tools directly into the workflow of emergency department staff.”

Pediatric dosage calculations require sophisticated weight-based dosing calculations (milligram/kilogram of patient weight), fractional dosing (such as milligrams versus grams) and use of decimal points for accuracy. The PEPID dosing calculators recommend the appropriate dosage after a clinician enters a patient’s age, weight and other relevant data. It automatically alerts the clinician to any potential reactions based on a patient’s known allergies and current medication list.

Hospitals have immediate access to the latest medical and medication information as this information is continuously updated by PEPID. This instant access at the point of care immediately benefits

T-System clients, given the difficulty for clinicians to keep up with new drugs and repackaging of existing medications.
