Plymouth Meeting, PA – July 24, 2013 – With the dog days of summer in full swing, it is increasingly tempting to stay shut-up inside with the air conditioning and a cool drink. While humans have plenty to stay occupied with indoors (Netflix, anyone?), dogs do not. Even the most responsible of pet parents could use a little motivation to make sure their top dog is getting all the exercise he needs outdoors – safely, of course. To help inspire dog owners to get back outdoors with their four-legged kids, Pet360.com has pulled together a list of this year’s top dog-friendly summer activities.

  1. Hiking – More intense than your typical afternoon stroll, hiking with your dog is a terrific summertime activity. Dogs will not only exercise their body but also their senses as they come across various sights and smells in your local wood or park. If you intend to go out for a longer hiking excursion, pack a knapsack full of healthy snacks and bring plenty of water to maintain your energies.
  2. Pool Games – Take swimming to the next level with an aquatic version of one your dog’s favorite games. Play a game of fetch with a floating dog toy or try throwing a toy that sinks and encourage your dog to dive for it. Pool tag is another fun game to play with the whole family and a great low-impact way to exhaust some of your dog’s energy. Just be sure to follow these pool safety tips for dogs
  3.  Kayaking – A fun sport for you and your dog, kayaking can be done in just about any body of water. While kayaking exercises your body, it opens up an entire new world for your dog’s senses to explore. As with any water-fun activity, both pet and pet parent should wear life vests.
  4. Surfing – For dogs and pet parents looking to hang 10, dog surfing is a new, safe and totally fun trend. Paddling out into the ocean with your pooch and letting him ride the waves in will give you both a rush. Regular practice may even prepare your pup to compete in the Surf Dog Surf-A-Thon.
  5. Skatejoring – Specifically for high-energy dogs who like to pull (e.g., Siberian Husky), skate and scooterjoring are becoming increasingly popular summertime activities. Using proper safety equipment and harnesses, you can have your dog pull you along on a scooter or rollerblades. For smaller dogs that are unable to participate in these activities, training them to ride a skateboard or scooter is a great alternative.
