Petmate® Partners with Pilots N Paws to Give Dog, Cats and Other Pets a Second Chance at a Forever Home
Arlington, TX (December 1, 2010) – Petmate is proud to announce its partnership with Pilots N Paws, a program that gives dogs a second chance one flight at a time. This unique program brings together planes, pilots and animal shelters to rescue and transport dogs, cats and other animals from overcrowded shelters to rescue organizations committed to finding them homes. An estimated 3-4 million pets are euthanized in Animal shelters each year. Petmate is partnering with Pilots N Paws to prevent these deaths and bring pets to their new homes – even if it’s two time zones away.

Since the program began in February 2008, pilots have donated their time, planes and fuel to fly thousands of dogs from shelters where they faced almost certain death. Some areas of the country are more likely to have overcrowded shelters and limited adoption opportunities. At www.pilotsnpaws.org, pilots can learn about animals in need and work directly with shelters and rescue groups to coordinate transportation. More than 4,000 animal shelters, rescues and volunteers are registered on the site.
The idea for Pilots N Paws was born when Jon Wehrenberg offered to fly a rescued Doberman in Florida to his friend Boies of Landrum, S.C. They were convinced that other pilots would welcome the opportunity to fly planes and save animals at the same time. They were right. Currently, 1,508 pilots are signed on to volunteer with Pilots N Paws. As Wehrenberg so accurately says, “pilots are always looking for an excuse to fly…transporting animals is certainly more worthwhile than flying somewhere for a $300.00 hamburger!”
