Seeing Things: Looking at photography exhibitions with young people A free education publication from The Photographers’ Gallery, London Edited by: Janice McLaren and Brenda Valdés ISBN: 9780907879923 72 pages The Photographers’ Gallery continues its series of educational publications with this third book, Seeing Things, which aims to illustrate how photography ‘changes’ when shown within a gallery context. Seeing Things provides useful examples of how young people can further engage with, and develop, their critical awareness of photography exhibitions. Looking at photographs in galleries is inherently different to looking at photographs in other contexts such as magazines, newspapers, in family albums or in digital form, on the internet or on mobile phones. The Seeing Things publication is an educational resource consisting of a main essay by Gillian Rose on looking at photographs in galleries; five case studies on different types of photography exhibitions (archive; contemporary/fine art; photojournalism; fashion; and documentary) and five project ideas inspired by each case study so that teachers or youth group leaders can plan a practical activity when visiting any photography exhibition. The contributors are Jo Booth (Learning Programmes Co-ordinator, National Media Museum and Lecturer in Contextual and Historical Studies in Photography, Bradford College); Juliette Buss (artist and freelance visual arts education consultant); Sharon Byrne (Education and Outreach Officer, Focal Point Gallery, Southend); Kyoto Kaneta (photographer and teacher); Janice McLaren (Head of Education & Projects, The Photographers’ Gallery, London); Rachel Moss (Young People’s Programmes Manager, National Portrait Gallery); Gillian Rose (Professor of Cultural Geography, The Open University); and Brenda Valdés (Schools & Projects Organiser, The Photographers’ Gallery). Available free to teachers and youth group leaders, Seeing Things can be obtained from The Photographers’ Gallery (email: projects@photonet.org.uk). Seeing Things: Looking at photography exhibitions with young people is supported by the John Lyon’s Charity as part of a larger programme designed to encourage young Londoners to visit The Photographers’ Gallery.
