Public Viewing Opens On Saturday For The Photographers’ Gallery Charity Auction at Christie’s South Kensington Viewing Dates: 12 – 17 February 2011 Live Auction: 20.00, Thursday 17 February 2011 Location: Christie’s South Kensington 85 Old Brompton Road, London SW7 3LD Nearest Tube: South Kensington Admission free From Saturday the public can view the works on sale for The Photographers’ Gallery Charity Auction at Christie’s South Kensington. Over 70 lots have been donated for the Live and Silent Auctions with estimates ranging from £600 to £10,000. This is the perfect opportunity for collectors of photography to add to their collections, while supporting a new state-of-the-art photography gallery in London. From Helmut Newton to Rineke Dijkstra, Sebastião Salgado to Corinne Day, the work will reflect some of the extraordinary talents who have exhibited at the Gallery during its 40 year history. Many of the included artists, such as Lee Miller and Sally Mann, exhibited for the first time in the UK at The Photographers’ Gallery. Eighteen past winners and nominees of the prestigious annual Photography Prize have also donated works in recognition of the Gallery’s support of their work at pivotal times in their careers. A series of free public talks by featured artists Simon Roberts (13.00, Tue 15 Feb), Rut Blees Luxemburg (13.00, Wed 16 Feb) and Karen Knorr (15.00, Sun 13 Feb), as well as Gallery Curator Stefanie Braun (13.00, Mon 14 Feb), will take place alongside the viewing. Coinciding with The Photographers’ Gallery’s 40th anniversary, the Charity Auction is designed to raise the final portion of funds to transform its Ramillies Street site with three gallery floors, an education floor and improved Bookshop, Print Sales and a Café/Bar. Construction has already started on this impressive project with the Gallery due to reopen in Autumn 2011. We have been overwhelmed by the generosity of the photographers and gallerists, as well as private individuals, who have chosen to donate works to the Auction. At no other point in our history has photography proven to be so popular with artists and audiences.
