PINE MANOR COLLEGE CHOOSES NEW PRESIDENT

Boston, Mass. – Pine Manor College (PMC) in Chestnut Hill, MA, one of the most diverse liberal arts women’s colleges in the nation, today named Alane Karen Shanks its new President.

Dr. Shanks has extensive experience at both private and public institutions of higher education in Boston.  Since 2006, Shanks served as the Vice President of Administration and Finance at Roxbury Community College, where she worked to broaden access to high quality public education for the educationally disadvantaged. Prior to this role, she served as the Associate Dean for Educational Administration and Finance at Harvard Medical School. She has also worked as a higher education consultant for five years, serving clients such as Wheelock College and Yale University. 

“With more than twenty-five years of experience in the educational field, Dr. Shanks is an astute leader, a successful financial planner and expert manager who will be able to enact positive changes to help support student success,” said Serena Greening, Chairman-elect of the Board.  “Dr. Shanks has a distinguished record of high achievement and we are thrilled to welcome her to the Pine Manor family.  She truly understands and appreciates our mission, and we look forward to growing the school together.”

Shanks received her BA from the University of California at Santa Barbara in 1981, her Masters in Management of Human Services from Brandeis University in 1987 and her Doctorate of Education from the University of Massachusetts in 2003.  Her dissertation, Thirty-five years of affirmative action at Harvard Medical School: A Mixed Method Program Evaluation was the winner of the American Educational Research Association Award for Best Paper for New Investigator, Division I, 2004.  Her research has been published in numerous academic journals.

“I am confident that my experience and abilities will enable me to uphold and strengthen Pine Manor’s critical mission of educating women of promise and potential,” said Shanks.  “I am honored by the opportunity to represent Pine Manor and am committed to bringing thoughtful, careful and strategic vision to ensure its long-term health and stability.”

Pine Manor is currently accepting applications for enrollment in its bachelor degree program for the 2011-2012 academic year. Both domestic and international students are encouraged to apply. Pine Manor also recently announced a new partnership with Kings Colleges to attract and serve international students.
