The German renewable energy company Neue Energien Premnitz GmbH, part of Richter Recycling Group, is taking a significant step towards becoming fossil free. Plagazi has been contracted to deliver a basic engineering study for a complete turn-key plant which uses the company’s patented waste-to-hydrogen technology. The order for a basic engineering study was placed after a successful pre-study phase and is expected to be completed in Q1 2021. The total turn-key project, including engineering, planning and construction, requires an investment of EUR 70M and is planned in the city of Premnitz near Berlin, Germany. The parties are working towards having the plant ready by 2023.

“Neue Energien Premnitz’s desire to continue the journey towards constructing a Plagazi plant represents a significant opportunity and a great step forward for Plagazi in Europe. The customer understands the considerable value our technology can bring to their sector of business and are willing to establish the first Plagazi plant in Europe. A lot of work has been put in to secure this deal and we are delighted to announce that the basic engineering stage of the project will begin shortly” – Torsten Granberg, CEO Plagazi.

The project, named Havelstoff, aims to combine Richter Recycling’s existing waste management process with Plagazi’s patented waste-to-green-hydrogen plasma gasification technology to produce 7500 metric tons of green hydrogen per year by treating 44 000 metric tons of waste. When implemented, the plant will be the first commercial-scale green hydrogen production system using plasma gasification of waste in Europe. The plant will be able to treat waste which today cannot be or is not recycled, which contributes greatly towards the circular economy goals of Germany and the rest of the European Union.
