Paul Loveday Biography
FROM working as a jakaroo on a cattle station in Australia’s outback, as a dustman, and even making a modest living as a rock musician, it’s been an amazing 56 years for English-born Paul Loveday.
However, it’s Paul’s work as Managing Director of Australian Bush Flower Essences where this innovative and dynamic businessman has left an indelible mark.
Born in Staffordshire where his mother worked as an artist for Wedgewood Pottery, Paul Loveday emigrated to Australia aged just six months old where he grew up in Adelaide. On leaving college aged 17, his first job was a jakaroo, working on a cattle station near Alice Springs, looking after the livestock, mustering cattle and even taking on the role of chief snake catcher!
Paul later attended Yarabee within the Royal Adelaide Botanical Gardens primarily studying botany and pharmacopeia, alongside horticulture, agriculture, plus landscape architecture and design. Even at a young age, Paul had a natural and intuitive connection to all things growing.
While at university, Paul worked as a dustman in the city as well as a landscape gardener for the council.
Paul began his corporate apprenticeship aged 20 by working as a rep for a horticultural company where within two years he was promoted to national account executive as the firm grew. By the age of 31, he was head-hunted to become divisional general manager of one of Australia’s biggest company’s pushing through the acquisition of a dozen businesses involved in water treatment and irrigation. But this high octane corporate world was not for Paul, clashing with his personal values and philosophies, and so he got out.
Remarkably, at the age of 35, Paul decided to form his own rock ‘n roll band. He had used his passion for music earlier to busk around some of Australia’s biggest cities to finance his surfing expeditions. Friends thought he was having a mid-life crisis when he joined the modestly successful band, Strange City, which was nominated for the best band and best album categories at the 1990 Australian Music Awards. He even set up his own independent recording and production company helping young artists.
A couple of years into touring and recording, Paul got a call from the Australian Economic Development Board who wanted him to act as a consultant developing selected natural health companies for the global market. He helped pioneer herbal medicine, homeopathy, and natural skincare markets for Australian businesses, releasing more than 200 natural health products. Paul Loveday had now found a new vocation and a passion which he had first discovered from his earlier studies.
Paul's life, along with that of wife Kerry, was turned on its head when his son Joshua took his own life at the age of 24. “I’ve spoken to many people who have lost children or loved ones to suicide,” explained Paul . “It’s a long and difficult journey dealing with the intense pain, suffering, guilt and grief. It’s like living with a big hole you don’t know how to fill.” He wrote an album ‘Theatre of Tragedy’ as a vehicle for expressing that grief and to help with the healing.
It was during the earlier consultancy work that Paul crossed paths with Australian Bush Flower Essences, which was then a small cottage industry. He was asked to review some of their essences for new product development. It was at that moment that Paul realised he had found the missing link in healthcare. All the natural products he had developed previously merely treated physical symptoms, not the cause – and through Joshua’s tragic death, Paul was left to reflect how he was a classic example of this as he and his family tried to heal both profound loss and the soul.
Paul Loveday joined forces with Australian Bush Flower Essences in 1998 to begin an exciting journey with the business. Together, they sought to develop a compassionate, conscious organisation, laden with integrity, creating innovative natural healthcare products. Their goal was to create an innovative range of holistic healing products which reached for the soul, supported by education and training on medicines for the emotions.
Almost a decade and a half later, Paul now heads up the company which exports to more than 30 countries worldwide and at the core of the business is the Love System Skin & Bodycare Formulations.
“I wanted the Love System to articulate the story of Australian Bush Flower Essences,” explained Paul . “The love and dedication of all of its people, their combined gifts and skills, their genuine care and depth of humanity. Ours would be like no other organisation; an innovative boutique business which genuinely cared, that created its success through clear values. I wanted to imbibe it with an ethos of sustainability, community, and giving back to those in need.
“I wanted the Love System to start a simple, contemporary dialogue on how one connects to their higher self, nourishes and soul and gets connected.
