Dos and don’ts for imaging infection control
Infection control has always been essential to Planmeca’s product design and development. Right now, the correct infection control procedures are especially important. They play a key part in ensuring the health of patients and health care workers all around the world.
To make your lives easier, we have compiled a list of dos and don’ts for our intraoral and extraoral imaging devices below. The list includes e.g. cleaning agents and surface disinfectants that are approved by Planmeca. The same information can also be found in our user's manuals.
Please note that country-specific directives, standards and specifications for medical products must always be considered, as well as specifications for dental practices and clinics.
Planmeca ProX™ intraoral X-ray unit
Surfaces
❗ Remember to wear protective gloves
❗ Switch the unit off before cleaning and disinfection
✔️ Clean with a soft cloth dampened with a mild cleaning solution
✔️ For disinfection, stronger approved agents can be used
- Dürr: FD 322 or a respective disinfectant solution
✔️ Approved cleaning agents

Sensor and cable
✔️ Use a new disposable hygienic sheath every time you use a sensor
✔️ To disinfect the sensor, wipe its surface with a soft cloth dampened with a disinfectant solution
✔️ The sensor casing can also be immersed in disinfectant solution
✔️ The sensor connector can be cleaned using a soft cloth
⛔ Do not leave the sensor in disinfectant overnight
⛔ The magnetic connector of the sensor cable should not be soaked
⛔ Do not sterilise the sensor or cable in an autoclave or UV oven
Sensor control box
❗ Remember to switch the device off before cleaning
✔️ Clean the control box with a soft cloth dampened with a mild cleaning solution
⛔ Do not disinfect the control box
Planmeca ProScanner® 2.0 imaging plate scanner
❗ Remember to wear protective gloves
❗ Switch the scanner off before cleaning and disinfection
Imaging plate scanner
✔️ Clean and remove any soiling with a soft, lint-free cloth dampened with cold tap water
✔️ Disinfect the surfaces with a disinfection wipe, or use disinfectant on a soft, lint-free cloth
✔️ Approved disinfectants
- Dürr: FD 322, FD 333, FD 350, FD 366 sensitive
⛔ Make sure no liquids get inside the scanner, as they could damage it
⛔ Do not spray the scanner
Imaging plates
✔️ Only use wipes intended for cleaning imaging plates
- e.g. Dürr Dental imaging plate cleaning wipes
✔️ Remove resistant and dried on impurities and disinfect with an imaging plate cleaning wipe
✔️ Use a new disposable light protection cover every time you use an imaging plate
❗ Allow the plates to dry completely before using them
⛔ Do not steam sterilise the plates – heat and humidity will damage them
⛔ Do not immerse the plates in disinfectant
⛔ Cleaning and disinfectant wipes are unsuitable for cleaning imaging plates
Light protection covers
✔️ Disinfect the covers using disinfectant before and after placement
✔️ Approved disinfectant wipes:
- Dürr: FD 333 forte (virucidal), FD 350 (limited virucidal activity), FD 322 premium (limited virucidal activity)
❗ Allow the covers to dry completely before using them
Cartridges
✔️ Remove any impurities with a soft, lint-free cloth that has been dampened with cold tap water
✔️ Clean and disinfect with a disinfectant wipe, or with a soft, lint-free cloth dampened with disinfectant
✔️ Alternatively, the cartridges can be immersed in disinfectant
✔️ Approved disinfectants
- Dürr: ID 213, ID 212, ID 212 forte
❗ Allow the cartridges to dry completely before using them
⛔ Do not thermally disinfect or steam sterilise the cartridges, as heat will damage them
Imaging plate storage box
✔️ Use a soft, lint-free cloth dampened with cold tap water to clean the surfaces of the box
✔️ Use a disinfectant wipe to disinfect the surfaces,
✔️ Alternatively, the imaging plate storage tray can be treated in a thermal disinfector or steam steriliser
✔️ Approved disinfectant for the storage box
- Dürr: FD 366 sensitive
✔️ Approved disinfectants for the storage tray
- Dürr: FD 350, FD 366 sensitive
⛔ If a thermal disinfector or steam steriliser is used, do not exceed the temperature of 134 °C (273 °F)

⛔ Do not apply sprays, liquids or foams directly onto any surface – use a clean, damp cloth instead
X-ray unit patient supports, handles and touch screens
❗ Change the bite stick to a clean one for each patient or use a disposable protective shield
✔️ Wipe all the parts after each patient using a surface disinfectant approved by Planmeca
✔️ For stains and other impurities, use a Planmeca approved cleaning agent when needed
✔️ Some support parts can be autoclaved at 134 °C (273 °F): a 3–4 minute cycle for porous loads and instruments – see further details in the user’s manual
Other surfaces of X-ray units
✔️ Wipe parts regularly using a surface disinfectant approved by Planmeca
✔️ For stains and other impurities, use a Planmeca approved cleaning agent when needed
