Dr Omar Hamid is looking forward to the future in digital dentistry

Dr Omar Hamid is a second-generation dentist and engineer from Austria. He focuses on all aspects of digital dentistry and CAD/CAM by combining his engineering background to the digital advances in dental medicine. Dr Hamid is thrilled about how fast digital solutions have developed in the past years and is eager to see what the future of digital dentistry holds.

As a dentist with an engineering background, the shift towards digital dentistry and combining the knowledge of conventional dentistry with digital dentistry has become naturally for Dr Omar Hamid. He is especially fascinated by the fast development of software, hardware and 3D technologies in the past years.

“At IDS 2019, it was amazing to see how quickly the technology is evolving. I am truly amazed with the new Planmeca Emerald™ S scanner, which will already have the caries detection functionality. The future is very bright for digital dentistry,” Dr Hamid believes.

Dr Hamid started exploring digital dentistry with Planmeca ProMax® 3D Classic CBCT unit including a Planmeca ProFace® 3D photo system and came soon to realise its endless possibilities. The CBCT unit was soon followed by a Planmeca Emerald™ intraoral scanner and a Planmeca PlanMill® 40 S milling machine. “Planmeca has really listened to the feedback of dental community on what has been missing in digital dentistry and applied it in their product development. I think Planmeca has done a great job in adapting and incorporating everything into the Planmeca Romexis® software.”

“I can do single-tooth restorations, bridges, veneers, surgical guides, splints or just analyse the model all in one software. This is very beautiful, because it saves a lot of time when you do not have to export and import files between different systems. This is also why I chose Romexis.”

Having used CBCT units and CAD/CAM solutions for many years already, Dr Hamid is excited about the new developments in digital dentistry. “The hottest developments right now are the intraoral scanners and 3D printing. The Planmeca Creo™ C5 3D printer that Planmeca introduced at IDS 2019 is simply amazing. Now it is possible to print dental models and do mock-ups for patients within one single visit. 3D printing makes it possible to do faster and better dentistry, which is beautiful.”

“I think 3D printing is the way of the future and believe we will see further improvements and new functionalities in the scanners. I am really looking forward to the future in digital dentistry,” Dr Hamid concludes.

Dr Omar Hamid graduated from the Medical University of Vienna in 2013 and is currently doing a master’s degree in Aesthetic Medicine in London. Before starting his medical education, he studied IT and data processing to become an engineer. Dr Hamid now combines his engineerin background to the digital advances in dental medicine. He focuses on aesthetic dentistry and all aspects of CAD/CAM, including 3D printing, guided surgery and guided implantology. As a second generation dentist, he first worked side by side with his father in his father‘s clinic in Vienna before opening his own private practice in 2017. Today, he runs two clinics in Vienna and acts as the President for the Austrian Society for Arabic Dentists and as Vice President for the Austrian Arabic Doctors & Pharmacists Society. Dr Hamid also lectures in implantology and CAD/CAM on international stages.
