Easter case report: Avoiding Easter frustrations with Planmeca Creo™ C5
In celebration of Easter, Planmeca presents a case study with a state-of-the-art solution for potentially empty chocolate surprise eggs.
Introduction
Last year, our Easter case report revealed that it might be useful to scan Easter eggs with a CBCT imaging unit to prevent unwanted Easter frustrations. This year, the study group wanted to address the problem where the Easter egg is – against all promises – empty, and decided to search for other options to avoid Easter surprise disappointments.
Case report
The brand new Planmeca Creo™ C5 chairside 3D printer was used in the study to fabricate Easter egg surprises chairside. Instead of capturing a CBCT image and an intraoral scan and creating a 3D model for the print object with the intuitive Planmeca Romexis® all-in-one software, the study group decided to use a ready-made model for the Easter surprise. Since the Planmeca solutions are completely open systems that support e.g. 3D models in STL and PLY files, ready-made models can be imported from other systems as well.
The study group decided to manufacture a little Easter bunny and used a 3D model of the bunny as an STL file which was downloaded from Thingiverse. The print was prepared with the Planmeca Creo™ C5 Studio software. Since the intelligent software positions the model on the build platform and determines all printing parameters automatically, our study group only needed to plug and print the object after the initial preparations.
While the study group was enjoying a cup of coffee, the bunny was being printed.
After the print was ready, the study group finished the print by removing the bunny from the build platform and cleaned the figure as instructed. The Easter bunny was then cured with an UV-device for ultimate durability.
Thanks to the distortion-free LCD printing technology and stable aluminium body of the printer, the end result was highly precise and detailed. Thus, the study group concluded that all Easter frustrations could be avoided by utilising the latest technologies chairside.
However, the case study also raised new research questions that should be addressed in future studies. The study group suggests that future research should focus on figuring out how to get the Easter bunny inside the Easter egg without a trace. Alternatively, the study group recommends to leave the chocolate out of the equation once and for all, which might be better for the teeth anyway.
