Planmeca imaging is “compatible with a modern healthcare environment”

When one of the largest multidisciplinary private clinics in Chile decided to switch to digital imaging, they turned to Planmeca for an all-round solution that extends from hardware to software. Dr Marcela Oyarzún, Head of Maxillofacial Imaging Services at the clinic, explains what makes Planmeca imaging so user-friendly, usable – and unique.

A hypermodern treatment environment requires hypermodern equipment – and Clínica Alemana in Chile is about as modern as they come. As one of the largest private clinics in Santiago, Clínica Alemana is among the 250 best hospital centres worldwide, making treatments of differing degrees of complexity available to patients utilising state-of-the-art technology and qualified professionals in medicine and dentistry.

In an advanced environment such as this, it is no surprise that Planmeca’s combination of sleek Nordic aesthetics with clever usability and ergonomics has fit like a glove from the beginning. The imaging tech at the clinic’s maxillofacial imaging centre includes the Planmeca Viso® G5 CBCT imaging unit, Planmeca ProMax® 2D imaging unit and two Planmeca ProX™ intraoral X-ray units – all powered by the Planmeca Romexis® all-in-one dental software.

“Just visually alone, Planmeca has an aesthetic look that is very beautiful and very compatible with what one expects from a more modern healthcare environment,” says Dr Marcela Oyarzún. Dr Oyarzún is a specialist in maxillofacial radiology who has been with Clínica Alemana for over 17 years, six of which as Head of Maxillofacial Imaging Services. Additionally, she is Director of Postgraduate Studies and Continuing Education at the Universidad de los Andes Faculty of Dentistry.

“Added value that other brands do not have”

At Clínica Alemana, the staff works with all dental specialities in one and the same location. The team of dental professionals is made up of 11 dentists, 20 maxillofacial surgeons, 5 maxillofacial radiologists, as well as auxiliary staff, which allows the clinic to provide continuous care in the outpatient and emergency areas and treat clinical cases comprehensively.

This multidisciplinary work is complemented by the clinic’s Planmeca imaging devices. The latest addition has been the Planmeca Viso G5 CBCT unit, which Dr Oyarzún says brought with it innovative usability features which the staff was quick to adopt.

“The positioning of the patient can now be performed from the user interface, where I can see the patient’s face and also adjust the volume I want to acquire. So, the shot is more predictable, which is added value that other brands do not have. It also offers us a decision that is safer, because we know what we are going to obtain as the final result,” Dr Oyarzún explains.

Detail in the detail

The relationship between Clínica Alemana and Planmeca dates back more than 15 years, when the clinic first made the decision to move from conventional to digital radiology. “Today, 100% of our equipment is Planmeca, and we work on our clinical cases in Romexis integrated into the clinic’s RIS PACS system.”

According to Dr Oyarzún, the company’s imaging solutions have not only been instrumental in making the transition to digital, but have also made imaging workflows more streamlined and X-ray findings more accessible.

“The digital workflows of the different Romexis modules are easy to implement, and the software allows us to explain to the clinician and even the patient what the different stages are. The image quality is also spectacular – there’s detail in the detail – and the Endo mode allows us to work with a very, very small voxel size, which means that we can support clinical decisions in a better and objective way.”

Creative solutions for intuitive workflows

Additionally, Dr Oyarzún says she appreciates how easily you can get around in the Romexis software – and how easy it is to find help and advice when you can’t find the tool for a specific action. “I think it’s a platform that is very intuitive, it has educational tutorials, and if you forget something or have a question, you can search and find answers quickly.”

“The imaging devices comply with biosafety standards, so they are easy to clean, and they are also ergonomic for the patient,” she continues. “I think Planmeca has really made an investment in creativity, while also thinking about the patient.”
