PostNord releases ABBA Stamps – celebrating 50 years of music history

Every year, PostNord releases a number of stamps featuring a motif that illustrates someone or something that has meant a little bit extra to Sweden. It can be a person, a happening, or an event stemming from Swedish nature, culture, history, sports, or society. To celebrate 50 years of iconic pop music beloved by listeners worldwide, PostNord has chosen the music group ABBA as a motif this year.

ABBA has had a tremendous impact on both Sweden and the global music scene over the past 50 years – a success story that began with the performance of "Waterloo" at the Eurovision Song Contest in Brighton in 1974. Their melodies, catchy choruses, and unique style have made them one of the most successful pop groups of all time. The combination of pop, rock, schlager, and disco generated a completely new sound that achieved unprecedented musical success in Swedish music history.

– It was a simple decision to choose ABBA as a stamp motif this year, given the 50th anniversary and the Eurovision Song Contest taking place in Sweden. No other Swedish music success has become as iconic and globally loved as ABBA.. As a Swede, of course, there is great pride in that. ABBA has fans all over the world, and we hope these stamps reach as many people as possible, says Kristina Olofsdotter, Head of PostNord Stamps.

The motifs have been designed by graphic designer Eva Wilsson, who wants the stamps to feel like like a luxurious currency note. Two of the stamps are in a square shape – a reference to the LP record form. Wilsson has also used ABBA's own font for the text "BREV Sverige" that you can find on all PostNord stamps, to mimic their records as closely as possible.

– The entire sheet is like a hologram full of exciting details reflecting ABBA's stage costumes from the victory in Brighton. In the motifs, I have created two small record covers with ABBA, then and now. One portrait is from the victory 50 years ago, and the other shows the group outside the ABBA Arena in London. A fun detail is that the ABBA members are placed in mirrored order on the stamps. And Björn's iconic star guitar is, of course, included, says Eva Wilsson.

The stamps will be released on April 6th and can be ordered on PostNord's online store. The stamps are sold in a sheet featuring all three motifs.
