Financial Times names PostNord one of Europe’s Climate Leaders

In the second edition of the Financial Times and Statista list of Europe’s Climate Leaders, PostNord has qualified as one of the 400 companies that are leading the way towards a low-carbon economy. This is testament to our achievements so far, and PostNord has now set even higher climate targets for the future.

The Financial Times and Statista have for the second time compiled a list of European Climate Leaders. The list contains 400 European companies that achieved the greatest reduction in carbon intensity (greenhouse gas emissions related to revenues) between 2015 and 2020.

“I am very honored that PostNord is on this prestigious list of companies and is recognized as a climate leader,” says Annemarie Gardshol, Group CEO and President PostNord.

“This relates to our successful reduction in carbon intensity between 2015 and 2020, and we have now defined even higher science-based targets for 2030. Our Green by PostNord initiative is a key element of our transition to fossil-free transport and we are working closely with our business partners to contribute to the climate transition,” says Annemarie Gardshol.

To contribute to achieving climate transition, the transport sector needs to undergo a transformation of gigantic proportions. With Green by PostNord, we want to shoulder the leadership role to show that it is possible to switch to fossil-free transport by 2030, including more than 13,000 vehicles on the Nordic roads driven by us and our partners. One of our milestones is that all last mile transports shall be emission-free throughout the Nordic region by no later than 2027.

The survey that the Financial Times and Statista carried out included only direct and indirect emissions caused by own activities and energy use (scope 1 and 2). Indirect emissions in the value chain (scope 3) have been excluded as these are very different between industries and not all companies have public data on their scope 3 emissions.

PostNord Group’s newly approved science-based targets are to reduce absolute scope 1 and 2 emissions by 80 percent by 2030 from the base year 2020. PostNord Group is also committed to reducing scope 3 emissions by 50 percent per delivered parcel within the same time frame.

About the survey

Statista compiled a list of several thousand European companies and invited them to submit their emissions and revenue data via a website created by Statista and the Financial Times. The application phase ran from October 2021 to January 2022.

In addition, Statista scrutinized publicly available data about approximately 4,000 European companies.

To be included in the list of Climate Leaders in Europe, a company has to meet the following criteria:

  • The company is headquartered in one of 33 European countries
  • The company had revenues of at least 40 million euros in 2020
  • The company reports emissions data independently
  • The company published the following emission data: emissions for scope 1 and scope 2 for the years 2015 and 2020
  • If a CDP rating was available, the score had to be at least B- (CDP stands for Carbon Disclosure Project)
