Publicans prosper at business's expense Following the news on a publican's opening hours during the World Cup, Poulter Partners, the North's leading marketing communications specialist, is urging employers to follow the company's lead and make provision for employees to watch key matches at work. Football fanatic and Poulter's managing director, Gary McCall, said: "We are putting up big screens and serving breakfast to reduce the risk of 'World Cup Sickies', which will soon be sweeping through UK businesses. We followed the same procedure last time and it was really successful with no employees taking advantage of the situation. "We did research last year which showed only 23 per cent believed their employers would make provisions at work. This coupled with the fact that 50 per cent did not consider it important to get to work on time confirms that employers will suffer greatly. Today's announcement about licensing laws will surely aggravate the situation." Earlier today a High Court judge dismissed case law from 1978 which has prevented pubs from opening early on the grounds that the World Cup is not a "special occasion". The case centred on a licensee in Bristol, who successfully appealed against the local magistrates' decision not to allow his pub to open. But the ruling also means thousands of other pubs can apply to open early and serve alcohol during matches.
