POWER-GEN Europe 2013 to address the issues involved in meeting
Europe’s long-term generation challenge

London, UK, 12 February 2013 – POWER-GEN Europe, the leading event for the international power industry, has announced its conference programme for this year’s show. Being held 4-6 June 2013 in Vienna, the conference will examine how system flexibility, integration, and technical innovation are critical to meeting Europe’s long-term generation challenge. It will also address the strategic challenges faced by Europe’s power industry, with decarbonisation targets, policy harmonisation, and market design topping the agenda.

Economic conditions and business uncertainty have combined to create stagnation in much of the European power industry as it continues its efforts to meet decarbonisation, energy efficiency, and green energy targets. The intermittent nature of renewables is posing new challenges in respect of security of supply, making backup generation critical to filling in the gaps. Technical developments have therefore focused heavily on flexible gas-fired solutions and storage technologies, while the need to solve the intermittency challenge is one of the major factors driving interest in the smart grid. The integration of power grids is also gaining momentum, with a number of practical steps and investment decisions having already been taken in the areas of interconnection, large reinforcement, and offshore transmission. These are all issues that will be covered in the conference programme.

“The power industry cannot possibly address the pressing challenges faced unless it works together to identify the best possible solutions,” says Nigel Blackaby, conference director, POWER-GEN Europe 2013. “The POWER-GEN Europe conference provides an ideal platform for power industry professionals to share key insights, learn from best practices, and debate the key issues and challenges organisations are currently facing with some of the leading thinkers in the industry.”

The conference has been put together by an independent Advisory Board comprised of recognised experts from across the power industry and comprises six tracks related to the two core themes of technologies and strategies. The strategic tracks focus on the challenges regulatory uncertainty, trends in fuel choices, project development issues and the forces working towards and against greater energy policy harmonisation across all member states. Other topics addressed at this year’s POWER-GEN Europe conference will include: Thermal & Nuclear Power Plants; Electrical & Automation for Power Generation; and Operation, Maintenance, Refurbishment & Optimisation.

Now in its 21st year, POWER-GEN Europe, co-located with Renewable Energy World Europe, offers the largest and most comprehensive conference and exhibition for the European electricity and power technology sectors. The combination of conferences and exhibitions across the entire spectrum of power generation is unique and is serving the vital move towards integrating the traditional fossil fuel and fast-growing renewable generation sectors.
