AN ODE TO SILENCE…

One lucky school is set to benefit from quieter, safer and more productive classrooms for its students thanks to Norsound. To highlight the benefits of its unique range of sound reducing and flame retardant acoustic door seals and finger protection products (such as hinges and hinge covers), the leading British-based manufacturer has just announced a schools’ poetry competition. Initially open to years 4 to 6 (inclusive) but with the possibility of being extended to include secondary schools at a later date, the competition invites schools to submit poems from their students based on the topic, ‘The sound of school days’. The entries will be judged by a panel including Norsound employees and representatives of the Noise Abatement Society - an organisation which endorses the use of Norsound products* and that advocates the ideal learning environment as having ambient noise levels of less than 29 decibels. The eventual winner will be rewarded with a full range of Norsound door seals and finger protection products, supplied and fitted by the company, completely free of charge. Speaking of the competition, Dan Jones, General Manager at Norsound said: “Solid timber doors, which are commonplace in schools, do provide an excellent acoustic barrier but to reach lower levels more conducive to learning, a classroom door needs proper acoustic seals around its entire perimeter. “To meet this requirement, Norsound has developed a range of low cost, high quality and technically advanced acoustic seals which can be easily fitted to any new or existing standard fire door. Once in place, these seals also deliver decibel reductions that surpass current building regulations such as those stipulated by Approved Document E (Resistance to the Passage of Sound) and Building Bulletin 93 (BB93 Acoustic Design of Schools). “In addition, our finger protection products prevent children trapping their fingers in doors. Currently, around 30,000 children a year in the UK suffer this fate with many of these accidents resulting in costly litigation. Even more worryingly, around 1,500 of these incidents, according to RoSPA statistics, are serious enough to result in surgery. “Norsound is proud to be involved in tackling these issues and the launch of our poetry competition is a fun way of raising awareness of our products and of our efforts.” More information on how to enter the Norsound poetry competition can be found at www.safeandsoundschools.co.uk For more information on Norsound, visit www.norsound.co.uk *www.noiseabatementsociety.com/pages/norsound-1 - ENDS - IMAGES: Norsound seal.jpg CAPTION: Safe and sound.
