BPI aids Haiti clean-up

Europe’s largest manufacturer of polythene films, bags and sacks, British Polythene Industries (BPI) plc has made a significant product donation in support of on-going relief efforts in Haiti. 10,000 clinical waste sacks, 10,000 household waste bags and 500 body bags from the firm have already arrived on the devastated Caribbean island to help with clean-up operations following the 12th January earthquake that’s so far left 150,000 people confirmed dead and 1.5 million homeless. All of the products donated were manufactured by bpi.recycled products, a specialist division of BPI that produces products for the healthcare, facilities management and janitorial sectors using recycled waste polythene. The business was approached for the donation by charity Oxfam in late January in what’s been the largest charity request it’s received to date. Only a few days later, the requested products left the bpi.recycled products’ Heanor, Derbyshire facility before being transported free of charge by local haulier Lockwood Haulage to RAF Brize Norton and then an onward flight to Haiti. Commenting on the donation, Guy Coates, Marketing Director at bpi.recycled products, said: “The effects of the earthquake in Haiti have been devastating but more people could still die if steps are not taken to control infection and prevent disease. The breakdown of basic infrastructure and sanitation means both are an ever present danger and so BPI is pleased to be able to do its part.” The UK's response to the 12th January earthquake in Haiti is being co-ordinated by the Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC).
