bpi.recycled products has made its own unique contribution to a trail blazing eco project. The British-based business - which currently ranks as the largest recycler of waste polythene in Europe with the ability to reprocesses over 70,000 tonnes of scrap a year through a nationwide network of Environment Agency sites - has just donated decking from its Plaswood range to the Groundwork Leicester & Leicestershire’s EcoHouse.

Located off Leicester’s Hinckley Road, the EcoHouse plays an important role in Groundwork Leicester & Leicestershire’s (formerly known as Environ and a member of the national Groundwork Federation) drive to promote sustainable communities. It is designed to be a showhome of eco-conscious living and incorporates literally hundreds of environmentally friendly features in the hope of inspiring visitors to make green improvements to their own homes. Since opening its doors in 1989, it has welcomed over 100,000 people, including members of the Royal family and government ministers. In order to extend the café area of the EcoHouse, Groundwork Leicester & Leicestershire turned to bpi.recycled products for Plaswood decking. This decking - like all of the items within the Plaswood range - looks like it’s made from wood but is actually produced from polythene waste such as used packaging, scrap silage bale wrap and even old wheelie bins which might otherwise have been destined for landfill. Aside from helping to reduce waste to landfill, this use of unwanted polythene also delivers reduced maintenance requirements over wood, as there is no need to paint Plaswood products or to treat them with preservatives. Plus, items made from Plaswood, unlike wood, can be recycled again and again. In addition to decking, other items within the range include park and garden furniture, fencing, street signs and countryside signs. Commenting on the donation, Caroline Harmon, EcoHouse Manager said: “We’re very grateful to bpi.recycled products for their kind donation of the new decking. We carefully considered what would be the best and most environmentally friendly solution before identifying Plaswood. As it’s made from recycled plastic it reduces waste to landfill whilst being long lasting and low maintenance. It also looks great and has created a lovely extension to our café area.” Guy Coates, Marketing Director at bpi.recycled products, added: “We’re delighted to be supporting such a high profile initiative as the Groundwork Leicester & Leicestershire EcoHouse. The project’s desire to use Plaswood decking highlights not only the green credentials of the product, but also the wider recyclability of polythene. Applications such as this serve to promote the positive attributes of polythene such as how it can be re-used again and again with minimal impact on the environment.” Images & captions: Eco House donation.jpg Decking with a difference.
