New refrigerant offers Precision a greener alternative with improved performance
Precision trials new Honeywell Solstice N40 refrigerant
Precision products have one of the lowest carbon footprints in the commercial refrigeration sector and the company is continuously investigating greener ways of production. So when Climalife UK introduced Honeywell’s Solstice N40 refrigerant, Precision ran a comparative test with their existing refrigerant to see if Solstice N40 would be a greener alternative.
“Ensuring that we remain at the forefront of green technologies is important, not just for Precision but for our customers,” says Andy Fysh, production director at Precision. “When we heard about the new Solstice N40 refrigerant we were keen to trial it and see if it would work for our products.”
Solstice N40 is 100% non-ozone depleting, possesses low toxicity (ASHRAE class A) and is non-flammable (ASHRAE class 1), which makes it significantly safer in use than alternatives such as hydrocarbons and ammonia.
Precision evaluated the temperature performance and energy consumption of one of its standard LCU323 three-door freezer counter cabinets using R404A against one using Solstice L40. Temperature performance and energy consumption were tested to EN153 over a 24 hour period, with the cabinet empty of product and the door closed.
Precision found that Solstice N40 offers better refrigeration performance than R404A with a lower energy consumption. Solstice N40 also exhibits lower recovery time after defrost and significantly better pull-down time alongside a reduction of about 65% in GWP over R404A.
“We expect further performance improvements with gas charge expansion valve adjustments,” says Steve Goldsmith, refrigeration engineer at Precision. “Solstice N40, based on new hydro-fluoro-olefins, is an exciting new alternative refrigerant than gives us the opportunity to maintain our position as one of the country’s most innovative commercial refrigeration companies.”
Precison will be introducing Solstice N40 into selected models throughout the year.
