This year’s Space Conference UK will see the inaugural appearance of C2D. This specialist business, which has been created by St Asaph-based Glyndŵr Innovations, offers optical and opto-mechanical design, testing and prototyping services for large scale optics such as satellites, aircraft and telescopes.

At the event - which takes place on Tuesday 16th and Wednesday 17th July at the Scottish Exhibition & Conference Centre in Glasgow – C2D will showcase its cutting edge engineering skills. It will also highlight how it is addressing the UK’s current shortage of optical mechanical design resources for refractive and reflective optical systems, including the support of large optics such as mirrors or lenses

C2D specialises in taking original concept design and feasibility studies through to product verification, prototyping, testing and manufacture. This ability to deliver multiple services under one roof contributes to improved effectiveness and overall project control. It also allows the business to produce consistently high quality, advanced solutions while offering an invaluable resource for manufacturing companies across the UK - many of whom do not retain a permanent in-house design team.

C2D’s specialist expertise and infrastructure is available to any organisation at any stage of a product’s development. To date, the business has already worked closely with customers across a range of sectors - including organisations involved in the manufacture of satellites, scientific instrumentation and medical equipment – where it has used advanced techniques to deliver effective project outcomes as well as improvements in cost efficiency. In particular, C2D has considerable experience in large scale, complex design applications.

Dr Phil Harris, Managing Director at C2D, comments: “C2D has a proven track record of success, having previously established an impressive reputation under its former name, the Precision Optical Engineering Group. We hope to build on this success moving forward as we continue to push the boundaries of opto-mechanical engineering by offering our customers cutting edge solutions. It’s this history and future vision as well as our existing expertise that we hope to communicate at the pending Space Conference UK.”

Notes to Editors:

C2D is a new business with an established track record. Officially launched in June 2013, this niche, high technology design and development consultancy was created out of the Precision Optical Engineering Group of Glyndwr Innovations, which was formed in January 2011. C2D took on its new name as part of wider rebranding to better reflect the business' specialist expertise and the benefits it offers.

Operating out of a state-of-the-art facility in St. Asaph, Wales, C2D provides customers in the optical, opto-mechanical and associated electronic sectors with highly specialised design services. These services range from original concept design and feasibility studies to product verification, prototyping and testing. It fulfils a growing need to support high technology manufacturing in the UK.

In particular, C2D specialises in the design of refractive and reflective optical systems, including the support of large optics such as mirrors or lenses destined for use in satellites, aircraft or telescopes. This advanced technology has also been transferred to smaller scale optical systems with applications ranging from medical scanners and testing equipment to imaging and illumination systems.

Techniques employed by C2D include simulation and optimisation using FEA/structural analysis to validate mechanical integrity under various g-loading conditions and temperature variations.

Through its use of 3D CAD, C2D can provide clients with detailed visualisations of proposed design solutions and a ‘virtual prototype' from which further modelling can be undertaken prior to producing detailed manufacturing drawings. This reduces risk and the time from product concept to delivery.

C2D’s expertise and support is available to any organisation at any stage of development or production. The business works closely with customers to achieve the specific needs of individual projects, applying advanced knowledge and techniques to deliver benefits like reduced costs.

C2D has quickly established an exceptional reputation for designing, developing and manufacturing precision optical and opto-mechanical components thanks to its specialised expertise and capabilities.

Recent projects involving the C2D team:
Periscope design
Optical mechanical support structures for precision polishing of complex or large substrates such as lenses and mirrors
10m Optical test towers capable of testing to an accuracy of 10nm
FE analysis in the design of light weighted Optics and mechanical supports for satellite industry applications.
Solar concentrator design.
Sub-assemblies for a leading UK Satellite manufacturer.
