ACLAND BURGHLEY SCHOOL - NATIONAL WINNER OF SCIENCE RACE 2002 Acland Burghley School, national winner of the Schools Science Race 2002 Treasure Hunt organised by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC), collected their trophy in the theatre famous for its TV Christmas science lectures at the Royal Institution of Great Britain. Dr Heather Tewkesbury, member of the NOISE, Be Yourself Team, is pictured here with the national winners at a ceremony for the 11-16 year students. Her presentation on her maths and science-based work with chocolate and sweet manufacturers demonstrated one of the creative and interactive aspects of a scientific career. Over 700 schools from around the UK registered for the Science Race, which included an on-line quiz and a Treasure Hunt. It also has the role of promoting public awareness of science, engineering and technology. It is the largest of the Government funded UK research councils, with an annual budget of around £400 million. The Schools Science Race has become one of the major highlights of its programme of activities for schools. NOISE (New Outlooks in Science & Engineering) is a UK-wide initiative funded by EPSRC. It aims to make science and engineering more relevant and accessible to 16 - 19 year olds. The Be Yourself Team are a group of science and engineering professionals who prove that these disciplines offer young people the chance to fulfil their ambitions and realise their potential.
