BLACK BOX NETWORK INDUSTRY SURVEY 2002 FINDS MANY COMPANIES STILL HAVE OBSOLETE NETWORK TECHNOLOGIES Gigabit Ethernet penetration grows steadily New research conducted by independent research agency, Revelation Research, on behalf of Black Box Network Services found that just over 60% of sites surveyed still have obsolete network technologies. 28% have IPX/Netware, 26% FDDI and 24% token ring. A few sites had DECNet or IBM SNA installed. Of these sites few plan to replace them in the next 18 months. However, token ring looks the shortest lived, with a third of sites planning its replacement in the next 18 months. Just over 20% using DECNet and IBM SNA planned their replacement and no more than 15% of sites using FDDI and IPX planned replacement. Richard Ryan, director, Revelation Research commented, "It's not surprising that most companies do not plan to invest in new technology this year, the research also showed that 17% of respondents had their budgets decreased this year and 38% were staying the same." The complete Black Box Network Industry Survey 2002, now in its 9th year, investigated trends in network infrastructure and technologies, access, security, power supply issues and attitudes among networking professionals about their working lives. Conducted using structured interviews by telephone in April 2002, the survey interviewed 201 networking professionals in manufacturing, service industries and the public sector.
