BTexact Technologies signs memorandum of understanding with National Natural Science Foundation of China BTexact Technologies, BT's advanced research and technology business, and the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) have announced an agreement to work together on a three year research programme. The agreement is designed to support UK and Chinese researchers in the scientific research of new information and communications technologies for cross-cultural collaboration and communication. Mike Carr, director of enterprise venturing at BTexact Technologies, said: "This programme will strengthen the standing of BTexact within China, in both the academic and commercial spheres of influence. "The project is BTexact's first research venture in China, which is an increasingly important international commercial market for us. We plan to use this research initiative to support business development in Asia Pacific and China, working closely with BTexact's Asia Pacific team in Singapore." Founded in February 1986 with the approval of the State Council, NSFC is an institution for the management of the National Natural Science Fund and one of the leading research funding organisations in China. It supports a range of basic and applied research, with a view to making greater contributions to the strategy of revitalising China through science and education. The project will enable BTexact to establish a strong relationship with NSFC and key individuals in the Chinese academic community. China has a number of technical research strengths, particularly in the areas of speech and language recognition, which is also one of BTexact's areas of expertise. The project will involve BTexact's Asian Research Centre in Kuala Lumpur, which has been set up to exploit BTexact's research and development in the Asia Pacific region. The Centre is researching future mobile services and ad-hoc networks. The programme will be launched in Beijing with a conference later in the year. Representatives from BTexact, Cambridge University, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the NSFC, Essex University and a number of Chinese Universities will attend the inaugural event.
