Chelsea Football Club hosts its own World Cup, helping young people to achieve their goals in life Tuesday 14th May 2002 -The Prince's Trust and Chelsea FC are teaming up to run an exciting event for over 100 young people from West London. The 16-25 year-olds, will compete in a fun 6-a-side 'World Cup' football tournament. The event will then culminate with a celebration of the achievements of the local young adults, who have successfully completed a Prince's Trust course which is run in partnership with the club. The winning team will receive a replica World Cup Trophy with Gold, silver and bronze medals for the players. The day has been organised as part of The Prince's Trust 12-week Volunteer courses, which are run locally by Acton and West London College. These are personal development courses that enable young people from a variety of circumstances and backgrounds to develop the skills and confidence they need to get through life and into work. The event takes place in Week 11 of the course when Volunteers are preparing for the 'Team Challenge'. This involves the team identifying a group of people within the community whom they can help. 2/ Chelsea Football Club helps young people achieve their goals 9.45am - 16 teams of young people will kick off their 'World Cup' tournament at Stamford Bridge, Fulham Road London. Competing teams include a team from the local YMCA, a local restaurant and members of the William Morris Academy. The money raised from the tournament will be used to organise a week of fun activities for young homeless people living in temporary accommodation and a day trip for pupils at the Cambridge school in Hammersmith. Pupils for the Gibbs Green school, who benefited from a community project undertaken by Volunteers team, will also benefit by helping out at the tournament on the day. 3pm - Family members, friends and other guests are invited to celebrate the achievements of the 5 members of Fulham Team 7 who have successfully completed their personal development course. Michael Cole of Chelsea FC will present the young people with their certificates of achievement. The Trust has been working with Chelsea Football Club, for more than a year, by offering unemployed, New Deal, employed young people opportunities to work together on projects in the community, undertake work placements and attending team building residential. The club's support helps to attract young people onto the scheme. In addition to hosting the football tournament the club also delivers vital practical support in a number of ways including work placements, signed merchandise for fundraising, assistance with community projects and use of the club's logo on promotional material.
