LORD OF THE RINGS TOPS THE NOMINATIONS AT THE MTV MOVIE AWARDS 2002 New York & London, April 23rd 2002 - Blockbusting fantasy adventure 'The Lord Of The Rings: The Fellowship Of The Ring' has topped the nominations for this year's prestigious MTV Movie Awards with an impressive six nods. But with 'The Fast & The Furious' and 'Rush Hour 2' hot on it's heels with five nominations apiece, 'Rings' director Peter Jackson will have to wait until the glittering ceremony on June 1st to see if he can put Oscar disappointment behind him and take home an armful of gongs. The eleventh MTV Movie Awards will take place at Los Angeles' Shrine Auditorium and will be broadcast on MTV UK & Ireland at 7pm on Saturday 15th June. The ceremony, traditionally more fun and populist than other Hollywood award shows, features unorthodox categories including 'Best On Screen Team', 'Best Villain', 'Best Fight' and 'Best Kiss'. The ceremony is also famed for it's dynamic hosts, glamorous guest presenters and attendees, and knock-out live music performances. An announcement about this year's hosts will be made shortly. The nominees for the MTV Movie Awards 2002 have been chosen entirely by MTV US viewers, and you can vote for your choice of winners by logging on to www.mtv.com. Ordinary movie-goers can decide whether Will Smith, Vin Diesel, Josh Hartnett, Elijah Wood or Oscar-winner Russell Crowe takes home the 'Best Male Performance' gong. Alternatively, you could help determine whether Kate Beckinsale, Halle Berry, Angelina Jolie, Nicole Kidman or Reese Witherspoon wins the scrap for the 'Best Female Performance' trophy. "As usual, the MTV Movie AWARDS is not your typical awards show. This year's 'Best Movie' category features blonde ambition, super fast cars, a green ogre, hobbits, and military drama," says Van Toffler, President, MTV/MTV2. "Critically acclaimed or not, these are the movies that our audience went out to see and the MTV MOVIE AWARDS celebrates the very essence of why these movies are made - to entertain and offer a fantastic escape for our audience." Last year, more people than ever in the ten-year history of the ceremony tuned in to watch the MTV Movie Awards 2001, which attracted over twenty million American viewers alone. The MTV Movie Awards 2002 will be seen in 165 countries via 35 channels, in 18 languages in 382.1 million households.
