Sony adds three clie handhelds to broaden its range

SONY ADDS THREE CLIE HANDHELDS TO BROADEN ITS RANGE [REMOVED GRAPHICS] 22 August 2002 Sony today launches three new CLIE handhelds, the PEG-T675C, PEG-SJ30 and PEG-SL10, offering PDA-enthusiasts a broader selection in entry- level and mid-range devices. The T675C is powered by a Dragonball Super VZ 66 MHz CPU, has 16 MB of internal DRAM and a high resolution (320 x 320) 65,536- colour TFT LCD. Just 12.5 mm thin and weighing only 140g, the device is wrapped within a stylish silver chassis that houses a Jog Dial interface and an integrated Memory Stick slot. The first of these features offers one-handed access to images or files and, working alongside the model's superior IR function, also operates as a remote control for certain DVD players, TVs and VCRs. The Memory Stick can be used for the storage and transfer of video and other digital content, including audio, transforming the CLIE into an MP3 and ATRAC3 player. Music files may be played back via the supplied stereo headset. The Memory Stick slot also lets users add more memory capacity (currently up to 128 MB). The PEG-SJ30 has a 16.8mm chassis and weighs 139g. It also features a high resolution (320 x 320) 65,536-colour TFT LCD and is powered by a Dragonball VZ 33 MHz CPU. Like the T675C, this model also has a Jog Dial interface and Memory Stick slot for one-handed file access and video and other digital file transfer and playback. The last of the three models is the SL10 which is the tiniest yet, weighing 103g and with a 16.5mm chassis. It has a 320 x 320 monochrome screen and extended battery life (two AAA dry batteries) which will power the Dragonball VZ 33 MHz CPU for half an hour each day, for up to 20 days in total. All other features are the same as its sister model, the SJ30. More on-board The data management facilities of the CLIEs, including address books, diaries, project planners and so on, are all part of the model's easy-to- use Palm OS (version 4.1). This OS not only consumes less power than alternative systems but can be enhanced with the numerous compatible applications available as free downloads from the Web. The handhelds also include a range of Sony software and other applications. For example, the pre-installed PictureGear Pocket can be used for viewing still images and the gMovie(TM) player for watching motion pictures. The models also cater for mobile Internet surfing via their AvantGo(TM) web channel browser. When used in conjunction with a compatible mobile phone, this application allows people to check their stocks and shares, book flights, read the news or get the latest sports results in real- time, wherever they are. For offline web browsing, the CLIEs can be synchronised with a PC and the transferred data saved for future reference on the Handheld. These models also have an integrated worldwide alarm clock and the Documents To Go® 4.0 Standard Edition by DataViz, Inc. for viewing and editing Microsoft® Word and Excel documents.
