THE MISSING LINK - CREATING THE EUROPEAN CAPITAL MARKET June 16-18 2002 The Finance Foundation*, an organization made up of a group of leading European financial practitioners working together to implement change in the European finance community, will be holding a high-ranking conference 16-18/06/02 at the Hotel Excelsior and Hotel des Bains Hotel, Venice-Lido. The conference will bring together over thirty speakers and 200 participants. Some of the participating executives and professionals are already working in preparation for the Conference, identifying what they consider to be the most immediate measures necessary to build financial Europe. Their suggestions will be collated in 'Catalogues de Grievances' (a term taken from the French Revolution) which will be presented, debated and modified in workshops during the Conference. Workshops will concentrate on the following: · Takeover Rules: To define a set of clear and consistent takeover rules to stimulate cross-border mergers and acquisitions. · Cross-border Clearing and Settlement: How to develop one efficient clearing settlement netting system that will apply to all of Europe. · Exploiting Electronic and Internet Potential: To concretely assess the role of new technologies in making the "great leap forward" to connect and build the European Market. · European Democratic Process: To build a transparent dialogue and decision-making process between financial market professionals and European Union parliaments, national governments, commissions and regulatory agencies. "Through this Conference we are going to identify the most pressing initiatives necessary to make concrete progress on creating a single European financial, in order to compete with those of the United States and Asia. The conference will define clear and constructive measures to be implemented within the next 12 months, leading to the accelerated development of a unified capital market. The resulting catalogues will be presented to the European Commission, the European Parliament & the national governments of Europe for deliberation".
