Retail marketeer's personal experiences inspire new safer driving initiative for business
Project Pictogram - Philp Palfrey biography
Phil Palfrey is a highly experienced brand marketing professional, with a proven track record of delivering category changing growth through insight driven new product development and innovation.
The idea for Project Pictogram came to Phil through personal experience. His daughter was in hospital for three months following a serious illness and Phil spent a lot of time visiting her. As he sat next to her bed, he saw a steady stream of air ambulances delivering road traffic incident victims to the hospital for treatment. As he watched, he wondered whether his experience in retail brand marketing, advertising and ‘nudge’ theory could be harnessed to address the issues of road safety in a fresh way.
He had developed the basics of Project Pictogram by the time he joined the Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service in January 2015 with a brief to ‘think outside the box’ and create innovative products and initiatives which would support the Service’s strategy.
Prior to joining the Service, Phil spent seven and a half years at Kingfisher Group, firstly as a Senior Brand Manager for B&Q and subsequently as Programme Innovation Manager for the group based in France and the UK. He joined Kingfisher from AKZO Nobel, where he held several senior brand management and innovation roles, working on brands such as Cuprinol and Dulux.

Editor’s Notes – Media organisations can take part in Project Pictogram and benefit from the CSR aspects by adopting the Pictograms as their own industry standard and:
Placing the Pictogram stickers on fleet vehicles e.g. sales cars
Including the driver education in their own staff travel plans
Using the Pictograms to highlight safe driving behaviours in print, on their websites and in association with travel messages.
