SCORES OF BRITISH MOTORCYCLISTS TAKE TO THE ROADS

You’ll notice more motorcyclists on Britain’s roads on Monday 17th June, as bikers come out in force to support International Ride to Work Day. Riders will be demonstrating the positive side of motorbikes, such as time and money savings, not to mention traffic busting, as bikes take up less space on the roads and help to ease congestion at peak times.

Breaking away from negative and outdated stereotypes, the modern motorcycle commuter is someone that arrives at work on time and with a smile on their face. With advances in motorcycle clothing, luggage and frugal fuel consumption (up to 120mpg on some models) a motorcycle or scooter offers British commuters a very real alternative to public transport and using a car.

Ride to Work Day by numbers:

  • £7,000,000,000 the value of the UK motorcycle industry
  • 3,500,000 motorcycle licence holders in the UK
  • 130,000 average miles a British commuter will travel to work in their lifetime
  • £50,000 spent by average commuter in their lifetime if they don’t capitalise on cost-savings by travelling by motorcycle or scooter
  • 1,708 hours stuck in traffic or delayed on public transport (motorcycles and scooters cut through traffic jams, ease congestion and avoid delays)

  • 120mpg or more when using a lightweight motorcycle or scooter
  • £16 road tax (1 year) for 125cc vehicles

  • 1 smiling face – yours – when you enjoy the freedom of riding to work

On Ride to Work Day the whole biking community comes together with events taking place at venues all over theUK, including at motorcycle dealerships, biker cafes and businesses. Two notable supporters this year include Santander and Visteon.

There are plenty of competitions and freebies up for grabs too, such as a FREEbike health check and some venues are offering FREEbacon butties, but only for riders that show up on their bike! Major insurance companies are automatically covering rider policyholders with commuting cover for the day, while the Ride to Work Day Facebook page is giving away Harley Davidson merchandise and biker app, Real Rider, is celebrating with a competition to win British Superbike Tickets and a pair of top-class Michelin tyres.
