Violet Reid – Shea Mooti Founder
Violet is a qualified nurse and worked for 10 years in the NHS. When Violet had her first child, Alexander, in 2005, he suffered with very dry skin, cradle cap and was prone to eczema. Prescribed creams and medical shampoos provided only temporary relief and Violet began to use other skincare products that were on the market at the time, only to find they exacerbated Alexander’s skin condition, even though they were supposed to be organic and natural. Violet realised the only way to ensure the products used on her baby did not contain anything nasty was to make them herself. After extensive research, Violet enrolled on a natural soap making course and found a new passion. The most important ingredient Violet encountered along the way was, Shea Butter, a natural emollient used for centuries inAfricato moisturise the skin of new born babies, dry skin conditions and prevent stretch marks for pregnant women.
Violet began making soaps and moisturising lotions at home using pure Shea Butter along with other natural oils and butters. Using these homemade natural products on both Alexander and her newborn daughter, Violet noticed a remarkable improvement in their skin condition.
Over the next three years Violet continued to make homemade natural skincare products for her own children, and for family and friends. They, in turn, wished to give the products to their family and friends and the hugely positive feedback encouraged Violet to create 'Shea Mooti', so that her unique range of products could be shared with the rest of the world.
Why ‘Shea Mooti’?
Shea, because the primary ingredient in Shea Mooti products is pure Shea Butter ethically sourced from AfriKids Daughters, a multi-cooperative in rural northernGhana. AfriKids Daughters is a women’s collective put together by charity AfriKids to secure a bright future for families through dignified income generation. AfriKids ensure their ‘Daughters’ receive a fair price for their labours while re-investing their own profits into a range of child rights and community development projects across the region.
Mooti comes from the word ‘muti’ meaning ‘tree’ in Shona the language of Violet’s native Zimbabwe and is a nod to the all natural ingredients used in Shea Mooti products.
