Triple nominated ceramic coating that enables the use of composites in harsh and high temperature environments to be on display, at UK’s leading composite and engineering show.

Following its successful nomination for three innovation awards in the past three months, Zircotec’s ThermoHold® for Composites coating will be on show at this year’s Composites Engineering Show, Stand F162. The ceramic coating, that enables composites to be used in high temperature environments is a finalist for the prestigious SMMT Automotive Innovation Award, the Thames Valley Award in the best use of technology category and just last week was a runner up in the British Engineering Excellence Awards.  The awards recognise the first successful deployment of the technology on the Aston Martin One-77 Supercar.

Zircotec’s technology is widely used in motorsport, notably in F1 where nine of the eleven teams rely on Zircotec to protect composite parts from high temperatures. The awards recognise the transfer of this technology to the road, enabling Aston Martin to use composites where previously they could not have survived, such as the inlets and around the exhaust tailpipe.

Zircotec’s proprietary process uses a gas plasma flame running at 12,000°C to apply the unique ThermoHold® heat resistant formulation in molten powder form on to the composite components. Unlike paint, Zircotec’s plasma spray application process ensures better adhesion and can lower composite surface temperatures by more than 125°C. The Abingdon firm is already talking to other manufacturers about using the coating on future cars.

The innovative nature of ThermoHold® for Composites is allowing Zircotec to explore new market opportunities. Visitors to Zircotec’s stand will be able to see the full range of composite coatings including those protecting against heat, wear and electrical interference.
