Turkey’s first CNG refuse trucks are equipped with Allison transmissions
Nine new Iveco Stralis trucks equipped with Allison 3000 Series fully automatic transmissions have been delivered to Bolu Municipality.
Bolu, TURKEY - Bolu Municipality, in northwest Turkey, has broken new ground in the country’s refuse collection sector by taking delivery of the first CNG-fuelled refuse trucks.
The vehicle specification was driven by both environmental and operational cost factors. By using the cleanest of all fossil fuels in combination with the efficiency of Allison’s fully automatic transmissions, Bolu Municipality aims to improve fuel economy and reduce exhaust emissions while still ensuring high operational performance.
Alaaddin Yılmaz, Mayor of Bolu city; Maurizio Manera representing Iveco; Erkan Yeğencik from Efe Endüstri; Özgür Arasan from Allison Transmission; and numerous senior city officials were present at the delivery ceremony of the new Iveco Stralis to Bolu Municipality.
During the ceremony, Alaaddin Yılmaz said, “We, as Bolu Municipality, selected Iveco refuse collection trucks equipped with compressed natural gas engines for an environmentally conscious approach. In addition, we aim to achieve fuel economy advantages by operating these vehicles.”
“Our technical department evaluated and assessed the Allison fully automatic transmissions and concluded that they effectively complement these CNG engines. They improve overall vehicle performance. We hope our decision can be an example for other provinces, breaking new ground in Turkey,” Mr. Yilmaz continued.
Compressed natural gas engines reduce up to 95 percent of benzene emissions and can also reduce fuel cost. Allison fully automatic transmissions contribute to this objective by precisely controlling shift points, keeping engine speed more constant and making efficient use of fuel.
Furthermore, thanks to the Allison torque converter, performance of a CNG-equipped vehicle is significantly improved. The torque converter in the Allison 3000 Series nearly doubles engine torque at launch, which provides unrivalled vehicle startability. Allison fully automatic transmissions also transfer continuous power from the engine to the drive wheels, even during gear shifts. This Continuous Power TechnologyTMimproves average vehicle speed and boosts fleet productivity.
The helical gears used in the transmission contribute to overall noise reduction in combination with the CNG powertrain, while advanced electronic controls and an engine driven Power Take Off provision allow easy and efficient integration with specialty equipment.
Allison transmissions feature an optional integral hydraulic retarder which works exceptionally well in a CNG equipped vehicle to maximize overall braking while also reducing vehicle brake wear. Ease of operation, reduced downtime and maintenance cost are among key advantages that Allison fully automatic transmissions offer to operations, which require frequent stop and go.
