Urbaser wins five-year, €46 million contract to collect household waste using Iveco natural gas trucks with Allison 3000 Series™ fully automatic transmissions

PARIS – Urbaser Environnement, a company specialising in urban cleaning and waste management, recently announced that it has been awarded a five-year, €46 million contract for waste collection in Paris. The company’s fleet of refuse trucks is almost entirely equipped with Allison transmissions.

Since May 2014, when the company initially won a cleaning contract for 16 Parisian districts, Urbaser has procured 23 Iveco Stralis and Eurocargo model refuse trucks –of which 20 are equipped with Allison 3000 Series™ fully automatic transmissions. These new vehicles also feature natural gas engines and meet Euro VI emission standards.

This order was part of the city’s decision to implement environmentally-conscious solutions with trusted, well-established partners. These Allison-equipped natural gas vehicles are reliable urban refuse solutions that emit significantly less pollutants than diesel engines, while providing substantially quieter operation. The quiet operation is appreciated by locals, and also increases operational efficiency and flexibility, by allowing for waste collection well into the night.

Urbaser always uses new vehicles for new contracts, equipping them with innovative products and advanced technologies, according to sales director Bertrand Hyllaire. That is why all 12-tonne or heavier trucks purchased by the company since 2008 have been fitted with Allison fully automatic transmissions.

“It is a matter of reassuring elected representatives, while reducing noise and pollution for locals – today’s priorities that are shared by all,” said Hyllaire. “Allison Automatics were chosen for their reliability, cost optimisation and the confidence they instill. They are still the benchmark in the field of waste collection.”

Since mid-2014, the partnership between Urbaser, Allison Transmission and Iveco has enabled the city of Paris to meet both its environmental and budgetary goals. The waste produced by 182,000 people living inParis’ 13th district has been collected daily by crews averaging 80 workers and vehicles with drivetrains designed to significantly reduce the noise and pollution emissions that have been directly related to air-quality issues in this urban environment.

The natural gas vehicles being used are as efficient in terms of power and acceleration as the equivalent diesel version, but the city benefits from a 15 percent reduction in carbon dioxide emissions and a 73 percent reduction in fine particle and nitrogen oxide emissions. Additionally, noise levels have been cut by half.

Allison fully automatic transmissions deliver torque multiplication at launch and uninterrupted power transfer to drive wheels, substantially contributing to the efficiency of alternative fuel power packs, while helical gears reduce noise emissions. The extremely short vehicle wheelbase of the truck, combined with Allison’s smooth, seamless shifting and precise inching ability also ensure unmatched maneuverability in urban operation. Transmission reliability and the use of a torque converter in place of a dry clutch, boost productivity while keeping maintenance costs low.
