Viessmann celebrates 25 years in the UK
Heating systems manufacturer holds commemorative event at its Telford HQ, focusing on technologies for the next 25 years and beyond
Viessmann has marked 25 years of operations in the UK at a celebratory event at the company’s UK headquarters in Telford, Shropshire (September 9th). The German, family-owned Viessmann Group opened its UK office in 1989 when a handful of staff was tasked with building a market for Viessmann cold rooms, freezers and commercial boilers. Twenty five years on and Viessmann’s reputation is firmly established as a manufacturer of high quality domestic and commercial boilers and renewable heating systems and a leader in the development of future technologies.
Today, the company has 90 employees and trains approximately 2,500 installers, contractors, specifiers and architects on its products each year. The Viessmann range offers oil and gas-fired boilers, solar thermal and photovoltaics, combined heat and power modules (CHP), ground, air and water sourced heat pumps and biomass boilers.
David Wagstaff Head of Heat Strategy at the Department for Energy and Climate Change (DECC), CEO & Chairman of the Viessmann Supervisory Board, Prof. Dr. Martin Viessmann and Councillor Malcolm Smith, the Mayor for Telford & Wrekin joined employees, customers and other VIPs at a commemorative event at Hortonwood.
Guests were able to tour an exhibition of the Viessmann technology that will heat UK homes in the next 25 years, including the award-winning Vitocal 242-S split air source heat pump, a bivalent heat pump/boiler combination, an innovative gas adsorbtion heat pump and the ground breaking Vitovalor 300-P domestic fuel cell.

“While Viessmann may not have been a household name in Britain back in 1989, we were still innovating back then. For example, we pioneered the Inox-Crossal heating surface for our gas condensing boilers and the MatriX burner for our wall mounted units which bring greater efficiency and longevity.
“We are genuinely very excited about what Viessmann has to bring to heating innovation at what feels like a key time for our industry. Over the next 25 years, Viessmann will continue to be at the forefront of the transition from boilers, to hybrids, to heat pumps, to micro CHP and to fuel cells,” concludes Russell.
Top Viessmann UK history facts
- In 1989, Viessmann introduced the very latest in cutting edge heating technology, the wall-hung condensing gas boiler. The first recorded installation of a wall-hung condensing gas boiler in the UK, in 1993, was a Viessmann Mirola boiler. It took another 16 years after Viessmann set up in the UK for the technology to become commonplace, after the changes to Part L legislation in 2005.
- Prominent public spaces where Viessmann technology has been keeping people warm over the past quarter of a century include Heathrow Airport, the Royal Opera House, the Tate Modern, the Regatta Centre at the Royal Albert Dock and the Green Building in Manchester.
- Viessmann started selling domestic boilers in the UK in 1999, the same year it introduced solar thermal products.
- From 2000, Viessmann changed its complete boiler range and introduced the prefix “Vito” to the names of all its products (e.g. Vitodens, Vitomax, Vitocal).
- As of July 2014, Viessmann’s heating and refrigeration divisions are once again co-located in Telford.
