282 boilers and 125 boiler rooms; Turkmenistan capital Ashgabat modernises city heating with the latest German commercial and industrial boiler technology.

Viessmann, one of the leading international manufacturers of heating systems, has completed its largest ever boiler installation for the city of Ashgabat, the capital of Turkmenistan. To reach the total installed capacity of 473.26 mW required to heat the equivalent of 33,785 homes, it took 177 articulated trucks three weeks to travel from Germany to the Central Asia Turkic state and then a further nine months to install the 282 boilers in 125 communal/governmental administration and residential boiler rooms.

Having set itself the target of achieving European emissions standards, Turkmenistan has been modernising and renewing its infrastructure and buildings since independence in 1991. The Viessmann Group won an international tender to supply the city in 2010, an award largely attributed to the company’s brand values.

Viessmann supported from the initial planning stage to the turnkey handover of the completed boiler rooms, managing engineering, timing and logistics, and the construction and modernisation of the boiler rooms. The 282 boilers are a mix of Viessmann Vitoplex and Vitomax series units with outputs ranging from 600 to 5000 kW, and provide enough heat to cater for 79,395 people, the equivalent of the entire population of Watford in the United Kingdom.

Further systems components included combustion systems, flue and chimney systems, chemical and thermal water treatment systems, pumps, pressure maintaining systems, valves/fittings and safety equipment and the entire plant control system.

All boiler rooms have now been accepted by the city authorities and are providing the capital reliably with heat.
