Under strict SORT tests on the 12m low floor city bus from SOR Libchavy, the Allison T280R transmission with latest optimisation features delivers great fuel economy

HANNOVER, GERMANY - Allison Transmission’s T280R model has come out on top in a fuel efficiency test that Czech bus manufacturer SOR Libchavy spol. s.r.o. conducted as part of its city bus optimisation activity. Delivering 38.4 l/100km over the SORT 2 cycle, the Allison Torqmatic® transmission with integrated retarder was proven to be the most economical fully automatic transmission option evaluated by the manufacturer. Under conditions designed by the UITP (International Association of Public Transport) speci-fication, the SORT2 tests (Standardised On-Road Tests Cycles) were performed on a new SOR NB12 12m city bus with an Iveco Tector 6 engine and fitted with an Allison T280R fully automatic transmission. Allison applied the latest driveline optimization features including Load Based Shift Scheduling (LBSS) and the unique Vehicle Acceleration Control (VAC) technology which defines the bus acceleration profile by directly controlling the amount of engine torque based on vehicle load. “This most robust evaluation exercise echoes the outcome of other recent European tests and proves that buses with optimised Allison fully automatic transmissions can be among the most fuel-efficient fully automatic transmissions in the market,” says Manlio Alvaro, Allison’s European Marketing Manager. “This is an excellent result for a 12m brand new city bus, and in reality when a bus is ‘run-in’ at around 40,000 km, we might expect fuel consumption to reduce even further.” Adds Mr. Jindřich Chudý, Business Manager at SOR: “We believe the future cooperation with Allison will be very beneficial as Allison offers high quality products which are very successful with our customers. By equipping our 12m city bus with an Allison transmission, we managed to reduce the fuel consumption to 38.4 l/100km in demanding city transport. This was thanks to the optimisation system features on the Allison transmission.” The tests were run over multiple cycles with a standard vehicle speed profile that represented city bus routes as per UITP specification, conditions which support test repeatability and allow fair comparison between bus manufacturers and component suppliers. There are three SORT tests which represent high and medium density and light city bus routes: SORT1 operates an average speed of 12.1 km/h; SORT2 has an average speed of 18 km/h and SORT3 has an average speed of 25.3 km/h. The results of this test have been fully certified by TÜV SÜD Czech s.r.o., the certification institute located in Prague. About Allison Transmission, Inc. Allison Transmission, Inc.
