From One Millennial to Another: What Does Renters Insurance Really Do Anyways?

It is hard to shift gears when you’re used to limiting yourself to “140 characters or less.” In fact it’s kind of funny, the more we use social media with the cute, catchy hashtags, adorable photos and hilarious video posts, we sometimes forget to communicate those things that are truly important.

Now that I have lots of space to write, don’t really know how to best begin talking with you about a little thing called renters insurance. However, this little thing could potentially protect everything you care about from that new laptop you use to watch Netflix, to that brand new phone of yours. And because this is so important, I’m relying on you to share this blog with your friends or to forward it to the people you care about so that it shows up on their Facebook news feed or Twitter account.

So you moved out of your parent’s house this summer, or will be moving out soon. Did they immediately turn your bedroom into the family office? Well, I can promise you if it hasn’t already happened, it likely will soon so just prepare yourself now!

Congratulations – Now it’s Time to be Responsible

At any rate, congratulations! Be it a new job, heading off to college, whatever – you’re outta the house and on your own!

So, here’s the skinny. You need to show your parents you’re responsible, right? Talk to them about renters insurance or better yet, call (not text) an insurance agent or company and get a few quotes. Renters insurance will not break the bank but could save you thousands of dollars if the unthinkable happens to your new apartment.

For years I didn’t really know much about renters insurance or even think I would ever need it. But renters insurance really does protect your things. I have had several friends who’ve lost everything and because they didn’t have renters insurance, it was tough to replace all the things that were destroyed. If you’re like me and you don’t know much about renters insurance its SOOOO easy and simple to find out about it. If you don’t believe me, then Google it and see what comes up.

Here’s why you should think about renters insurance:

An average renters insurance policy costs less than $20 a month, several companies even offer discounts if you have a smoke detector or alarm.

It protects your belongings such as an iPod, iPad, TV, computers and jewelry. If they’re destroyed or stolen, these items could be replaced under a renter’s insurance policy.

In addition to theft or loss, renters insurance also protects in the event of fire or water damage. If a pipe bursts and your belongings are destroyed, your items will likely be covered, subject to the limits of your policy.

If you’re forced to move out due to an emergency that renders your place uninhabitable, your renters insurance policy can potentially cover additional living expenses until you can return.

If a visitor is injured in your home? Renters insurance can protect you against financial loss.

So Why Not?

You have a lot to do as you move out there on your own. New decorations, new appliances, housewarming parties – while you take care of all that – make sure to take care of all of your new stuff in your new world! Add renters insurance to the list!!!
