Senate Tentatively Passes Texas Hail Bill

AUSTIN, Texas- Joe Woods, vice president, state government relations for the Property Casualty Insurers Association of America (PCI), today issued the following statement commending the Texas Senate for tentatively passing HB 1774, which would help curtail hail lawsuit abuse and protect consumers.

“Weather-related lawsuit abuse by a few is a problem for every consumer in the state. This legislation is designed to protect consumers from bad actors who try to profit off the misfortune of storm victims. The unnecessary lawsuits being filed are putting homeowners through months of needless litigation.”

“This bill maintains all of the consumer protections currently on the books, makes the existing 60-day notice of suit enforceable, stops personal lawsuits from being filed against insurance company employees and agents, and continues to make insurance companies pay a tough penalty for failing to make prompt payments.

“Texas has been in dire need of hail lawsuit abuse reform, and we applaud the Senate and House for taking steps to protect storm victims and consumers.”
