The West Surrey Association of Surveyors, Auctioneers & Estate Agents (WSA) has elected Tony Jamieson MRICS, senior partner at Clarke Gammon Wellers as its new chairman for 2014 - 2015.

The appointment comes during a pivotal year for Mr Jamieson as Clarke Gammon Wellers is also celebrating its 95thanniversary, having been founded in Guildford’s High Street in 1919.

A qualified surveyor, Tony started as an estate agent in Godalming in 1986, opting during the early years to go to university whilst working to gain his professional surveying qualifications. As a surveyor, he joined Clarke Gammon Wellers in 1994, becoming a partner in 1998.  He is also a qualified auctioneer and specialises in development and planning of new homes as well as undertaking all types of professional valuation work; dealing in the acquisition, sale and rental of land, residential and commercial properties.

This is Tony’s second time of taking up the chairmanship of the Association having last served in 1999 -2000.  “Many industries are affected by economic highs and lows but few more so than the property market; buying and selling property is also a highly emotive process for both parties and the way in which buyers and sellers are advised and their transactions handled, requires skill and experience underpinned by local knowledge and understanding.

“The WSA was founded in 1953 to uphold and promote professional and ethical values amongst the local agents in the area and those objectives are as valid today as they were some 60 years ago. Our Association has become highly regarded for the work it has done within the local property market in fostering good professional ethics between agents and eradicating some of practices that can give the industry a poor reputation.  We are also creating a professional networking facility where agents can gain Compulsory Professional Development hours.

“I am delighted to be appointed Chairman for a second term – and to follow in the footsteps of three of the former partners of Clarke Gammon who also held the post - and look forward to continuing the Association’s work; there have been a number of new companies opening in the area in recent years and

I want to encourage their staff to join the Association.  It represents all the disciplines of the market including surveying, auctions, residential sales and lettings. In terms of sales, the property market is once again witnessing increased demand from buyers resulting in rising prices; it is important that our vendors are given expert, realistic advice on the value of their home underpinned by good local knowledge, research and price comparisons. Good advice from the outset enables the subsequent sale negotiations to be easier and expectations realised.”

One of the highlights of the year is the Annual Awards and Gala Dinner which not only recognises the achievements of agents throughout the year but also raises considerable sums for local children’s charities in the area; last year’s dinner raised in excess of £15,000. Comments Tony: “Everyone likes to be recognised for their achievements and successes and we agents are no different!  The WSA’s Awards highlight the individual members and the companies whose work and behaviour upholds the professional standards which we promote.

He concludes: “Taking on the role as Clarke Gammon Wellers celebrates its 95thanniversary will make the next 12 months a very exciting, and busy, time for me and I am looking forward to all it will entail.”
