The sun shines on The Fallen, a massive sand art project on the beach of Arromanches, France, for Peace Day 2013
Today (Saturday 21 September 2013) saw the creation of The Fallen, a project undertaken by artists from Sand In Your Eye on the beach at Arromanches in France (one of the beaches which featured in the D-Day landings) to mark Peace Day. Along with a host of volunteers, Jamie Wardley and Andy Moss hoped to rake the images of 9000 ‘fallen’ onto the beach – an artwork that would be washed away by the tide later on in the day.
The sun shone on the beach, the artists and the volunteers, and you can see some of the spectacular results in our online photo library, which contains high resolution images to download.

The silhouettes of thousands of bodies drawn into the sand on the beach is at the same time stunningly beautiful and a stark reminder of the lives lost in just one day during the Normandy landings of 1944. Veterans and families, including some who have lost family members in more recent conflicts, have been involved in the project.
