Compact Unit Delivers Energy Capacity Equivalent to 115 “D” Cell Batteries in a 2.2lb Disposable Form Factor

Keep your devices charged so you can stay connected, informed, and entertained when power lines are down

SANTA ANA, Calif. – January 7, 2013 - QuantumSphere, Inc. (QSI), a leading provider of advanced metal air battery systems and components, today announced the launching of a new advanced portable power project on Kickstarter.com - the MetAir Solstice - a 55,000 mAh zinc-air battery and USB mobile device charger. The MetAir Solstice is a non-rechargeable compact battery system designed specifically for emergency or back-up power applications, when traditional sources of electricity are unavailable and your rechargeable mobile device batteries are dead. It provides the equivalent energy capacity of 115 “D” cell batteries under a 2amp load at a fraction of the size, weight, and cost and also has an integrated room light and radio – all at up to a 60% savings over buying the equivalent disposable batteries and equipment separately.

The new MetAir Solstice portable power unit will provide more than 20 full charges to your iPhone 5, more than 5 full charges to your iPad 3, and provide LED room lights for six hours a night - up to 12 consecutive nights. There is no external electricity, liquid fuel, or ongoing re-charging maintenance required with the MetAir Solstice, ensuring on-demand power is available when you need it most. Unlike rechargeable batteries, it has a minimum shelf life of three years and unlike generator systems, it does not depend on access to gasoline or a sunny or windy day to provide power - it just works.

On November 5, 2012, more than 8 million Americans went without electricity, some exceeding twelve days, due to North East super storm Hurricane Sandy. As a result, New York Governor, Andrew Cuomo, calls Extreme Weather Patterns "The New Normal" and insists that government agencies - and citizens - do more to prepare.

This is not the only one type of disaster that can strike us at any time. We still have to worry about other natural and unnatural disasters including fires, floods, earthquakes, tornadoes, among others. To this end, according to FEMA, major disaster declarations in the U.S. have grown 400% since 1950. In 2011 alone, there were 3,071 reported power outages across the U.S., affecting 41.8 million people and leading to costly service interruptions, huge inconveniences, and even death.

“We decided that Kickstarter would be a fitting place to launch the MetAir Solstice as we have great respect for the forum and audience it has created,” says Kevin Maloney, QuantumSphere CEO. “Nothing validates a product better than rapid, direct exposure to a mass of early adopters and potential consumers.”

Inside the MetAir Solstice portable power system is an eco-friendly, lightweight, high power, and disposable zinc-air battery cartridge. The battery cartridge consists of five zinc-air battery cells and offers the highest available energy density of any non-rechargeable commercially available battery system, by size and weight. The power cartridge is designed for quick and easy replacement in emergency situations or outdoor recreational use, offering convenience, safety, security, and peace of mind. Zinc-air batteries are also eco-friendly, safe, non-combustible, non-hazardous (containing NO added mercury, cadmium, lead or lithium), and generally considered safe for disposal with normal household waste.

Commencing in the third quarter of 2013, the MetAir Solstice will be available online at www.MetAirPower.com   and through select retailers at a cost of $119. The high-power replaceable / disposable 55,000 mAh zinc-air battery cartridge for the MetAir Solstice will be available at cost of $49 (versus about $230 for the equivalent D cells at retail prices).
