Quicklight provides illuminating advice for businesses pursuing ISO14001
Lighting maintenance service provider Quicklight today issued advice to businesses hoping to achieve the environmental standard ISO14001: those aiming for ISO14001 must obtain an audit trail for any lamps legally required to be recycled in accordance with the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) directive.
The ISO14001 standard is designed to help businesses reduce their environmental impact, and producing evidence for the correct method of disposal for certain types of lamps is just one of many requirements set. Commercial luminaires fitted with fluorescent lamps, straight and compact fluorescent lights, high intensity discharge lamps and low-pressure sodium lamps are legally required to be disposed of under the WEEE directive. This potentially harmful waste for landfill must be collected into specially designed receptacles and taken to a WEEE- registered specialist recycling company.
“The ISO14001 assessor will need to see a consignment note from a registered waste carrier, showing the number of lamps removed and the route of disposal,” explains Andy Cole, director at Quicklight. “Businesses need to insist that their lighting maintenance contractor provides them with this paper trail. If the Environment Agency is investigating any contamination in the vicinity, it will expect businesses with ISO14001 to demonstrate the correct method of disposal,” added Mr. Cole.
Quicklight provides a national lighting maintenance service operating all over the UK. It is a registered waste carrier and is accredited with the ISO14001 standard. As a matter of course, Quicklight issues its customers with consignment notes for the lamps it removes and recycles under the WEEE directive. Lamps are taken to special drop-off points around the country, where the receiving company signs the consignment notes.
