Quincy Bioscience Obtains Self-Affirmed GRAS Status for its Apoaequorin Ingredient
Madison, Wis – (March 26, 2013) An independent panel of expert toxicologists and food scientists has affirmed Quincy Bioscience’s apoaequorin ingredient as Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS). After a comprehensive evaluation of research and toxicology studies, the expert panel concluded that apoaequorin is safe for use in food products including ice cream/ice milk (milkshake), and fruit juices (smoothies). The U.S. Food and Drug Administration considers an ingredient to be GRAS when the substance is generally recognized, among qualified experts, as having been adequately shown to be safe under the conditions of its intended use.
Apoaequorin, a protein originally discovered in a jellyfish, is a calcium-binding protein manufactured by Quincy Bioscience. Apoaequorin is currently used in Prevagen®, a memory supplement available in over 20,000 stores across the nation. Calcium in the nervous system is a requirement for vital brain cell functions. Research has shown the natural course of aging produces calcium imbalances which can affect the ability to remember.
“We are excited about the GRAS status of Apoaequorin which will now allow the ingredient to be used in conventional foods,” commented Quincy’s President Mark Underwood. “It brings added confidence in the safety of our ingredient,” Underwood said.
