HOW BIG IS THE CO2 FOOTPRINT OF YOUR SNACK?

Consumers are increasingly interested in actively preventing climate change.
They need practical information on the composition of carbon dioxide footprints.
In response to this need, Raisio has into use a label describing the food
product's carbon dioxide emissions. As the first Finnish food product, the
Elovena oat flakes have been CO2-labelled since April 2008, and now Elovena
snack drink Sunny follows. Raisio will expand the range of CO2-labelled products
in 2009.

Can a snack be luxurious?

You can impact your personal well-being as well as that of the environment by
choosing more often plant-based products. Nutrition content information can
already be found on food packages but their environmental impacts are more
difficult for consumers to assess. Now, to help environmentally aware consumers
choose their snacks, the Elovena snack drink Sunny is equipped with a CO2 label.
The first CO2-labelled Elovena drinks became available in Finnish stores in
February 2009.

The drink's carbon dioxide emissions total 95 grams per 100 grams of product,
which is quite a low level. This rate covers the product's entire life cycle in
Finland, from cultivation through processing to the store warehouses. People
with ecological lifestyles find luxury in things that make them feel good and
happy - such as Elovena snack drink.

Can anything be easy, tasty and healthy at the same time?

Plant-based, healthy nutrition doesn't mean compromising on taste. Elovena Sunny
is a soft, oat-based snack drink with the taste of buckthorn and apricot and a
number of healthy properties. The drink contains no artificial additives,
lactose or cholesterol but it is rich in fibre, which means that it keeps hunger
away for a long time. Elovena Sunny contains 100% of the recommended daily
intake of vitamin C and Omega-3. The product's energy content is 80 Kcal/100 g.

I don't even drive a car - why should I be environmentally concerned for what I
eat?

Food accounts for one-third of the environmental impacts of households, which is
equal to that of housing or traffic. Your daily meal choices can make a big
difference!

According to Johanna Siltala, Marketing Director of Raisio's Food Division,
consumers want more detailed information on the impacts of choices on the
environment, climate change in particular. ”Raisio's CO2 label has generated a
great deal of interest and talk among consumers and decision-makers. We believe
that in the near future, CO2 emissions labelling will grow more common on food
packages alongside the price and nutritional content labels already in use,”
Siltala predicts.
